From creepy to nonconsensual: Shocking awards show moments that crossed the line
Hollywood and the celebrity world is still reeling from Will Smith's unexpected moment of violence at this year's Academy Awards but it is not the first time that a star has done something inappropriate at a big, televised event.
In the past, such things were laughed off or excused, but times have changed and thanks to the "me too" movement and a world ready to hold everyone up to the same standards, that's changing.
Whether they think they can do what they want due to their power and status, think it's funny or have a genuine mental illness, just because they are highly successful in their chosen career doesn't mean their behaviour should be accepted or even tolerated.
Here are some of the most shocking stunts people pulled at top events in the past...
Jim Carrey kisses Alicia Silverstone against her will
Jim Carrey, 60, was one of the first Hollywood celebrities to call Will Smith out for what he'd done. "I was sickened, I was sickened by the standing ovation," Carrey told CBS’ This Morning about the slap and the response by the audience.
However, The Mask actor is not squeaky clean himself. When he was presented with the award for Best Comedic Performance for The Cable Guy at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards by the then 20-year-old Alicia Silverstone, Carrey grabbed her face and kissed her on the lips. Alicia looked like she was trying to get away but Carrey, 35 at the time, held on to her.
Many people on Twitter pointed out Carrey's hypocrisy.
"It's amazing that Jim Carrey sexually assaulted Alicia Silverstone by physically forcing her to kiss him on national TV and it had literally no impact on his career whatsoever," one tweeted.
"Regardless of age or age gaps, what Jim Carrey did was ASSAULT. He's scum and he had no business forcing himself on people!" another added.
Adrien Brody kisses Halle Berry against her will
Similarly, Oscar winner Adrien Brody shocked the Academy Awards audience and viewers at home when he accepted his Oscar from Halle Berry. The winner of the Best Actor award for The Pianist grabbed presenter Halle, dipped her backwards and then kissed her.
When Halle was asked about the kiss on the Andy Cohen show Watch What Happens Live in 2017, she explained that it was not planned and that she knew nothing about it beforehand.
After asking Andy if she could be real, she said "I was like 'What the f**k is happening right now?' That is what was going through my mind."
Jenny McCarthy kisses Justin Bieber against his will
And it's not just the guys that have given out inappropriate and nonconsensual kisses. Model and presenter Jenny McCarthy decided to lay one on a then 18-year-old Justin Bieber at the American Music Awards in 2012, before also grabbing his neck and squeezing his butt.
"Wow. I feel violated right now," Justin said, laughing uncomfortably while accepting an award. "Wow."
And Jenny's response didn't make it any more comfortable.
"It was a little cougar scary but I took the opportunity in the window, considering I’ll never get to do it again, and kind of molested him," Jenny, 40 at the time, told Entertainment Tonight.
"I want some Bieber fever — and I want a Bieber rash. It’d be like cougar rape," she added.
Luckily Jenny was just mouthing off and left the poor teen alone after that.
Rita Ora rips off Zac Efron's shirt
As Zac Efron was giving his acceptance speech for the Best Shirtless Performance award at the 2014 MTV Music Awards, Rita Ora responded to the crowd's chants to rip his shirt off and did just that.
While Zac admitted it was not planned, despite the award he was receiving, he did admit to Kyle and Jackie O that he was grateful for the distraction from his speech.
"I had some sort of terrible speech planned, I was having a mild heart attack up there and Rita, bless her heart, saved me," he revealed.
"She’s really cool man, I said, 'Thank you so much'. She was like, 'Really?' I said: 'Yeah you saved me from a pretty embarrassing speech'."
Isaac Mizrahi grabs Scarlett Johansson's boob on the red carpet
At the 2006 Golden Globes, openly gay fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi was doing red carpet interviews when he got a little handsy with then 21-year-old Scarlett Johansson, grabbing her breast after asking about her underwear.
"I just wanna feel it," Mizrahi, then 44, told Scarlett. "Oh, that's totally working."
Scarlett tried to laugh it off saying into the camera, "What is going on?" Mizrahi soon exclaimed: "I touched Scarlett's boobs! I touched Scarlett's boobs!"
Later Scarlett responded to the incident saying: "I'd been prepping for two hours with hair and makeup and getting dressed. And the first interview I do, someone who I have never met before fondles me for his own satisfaction," Scarlett told The Los Angeles Times.
Scarlett also responded to Mizrahi's excuse that he just wanted to know how her dress was made.
"I'm sure he was very fascinated by that, like he doesn't know how a dress works," she told the Times of the experienced fashion designer.
Kanye West snatches a microphone from Taylor Swift
When 19-year-old Taylor Swift won Best Female Video Award at the 2009 MTV Video Awards, it should have been her moment on stage.
However just as she was making her acceptance speech, Kanye West stormed the stage and grabbed the microphone from a shocked Taylor saying: "Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you and I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!"
Once Kanye had finished his rant and handed Taylor the microphone back, her time was up. He was escorted out of the awards show and Beyoncé later used her time when she won Video of the Year to let Taylor finish her speech.
