Shekinah Garner of '90 Day' Fame Shares the Truth Behind Her Finances

One look at Shekinah Garner, 42, and her Turkish boyfriend, Sarper Güven, 44, and you can tell they clearly put some work into their appearance. Makes sense, given that Sarper is a personal trainer.

In Season 5 of 90 Day: The Other Way, fans watched as Sarper kept meticulous track of Shekinah's weight, asking her to get on a scale in front of him on camera. This season, they've taken things to a brand-new level with Sarper designing a new nose for Shekinah's face.

"I can see why it sounds crazy. I mean, he's a man and I guess typically we wouldn't think that a guy would know what we need as women in terms of, like, beauty things, but he has a real eye for it," said the Los Angeles-based esthetician.

"I mean, he told me I should cut my hair to look more flattering with my face," she said of her new, shorter haircut.

"He even does my makeup sometimes. He'll come and do all the finishing touches. I'll come out and he'll be like, 'You look so pretty, but I just want to do a little thing here and there,'" she explained further. "And he'll do little touches. He knows what looks good. And so I trusted him."

The couple shocked 90 Day: The Other Way fans this season with explosive arguments (RIP to Sarper's glass bottle shrine), controversial opinions and the nose job. Parade sat down with Shekinah after the season began airing to get the scoop on her relationship and how exactly she came to allow him to design her new nose.

While some, including Shekinah's own friends, thought that allowing someone who is not a trained plastic surgeon to design her nose was a bit nuts, the couple does stick to traditional gender roles in their relationship.

"I decided early on in the relationship, as the woman, I don't really care for the fact that I'm the one coming to him all the time," she told Parade. "That made me feel like I was stepping out of my feminine role and being more masculine, the pursuer, you know, I'm going to Turkey. He's never coming to the U.S. to be with me, and I thought he needs to always pay for my flights. He said, I will do that. And so he always has."

Sarper doesn't simply foot the bill for Shekinah's flights. He covers everything for her. "I've never paid for anything when I'm with Sarper. When I am in Turkey, I save a lot of money because I'm not ever reaching for my wallet," she said.

"He dipped into his savings a lot," she continued. "And I feel bad about that, but at the same time, he's a grown man. He can figure it out."

Rumors have swirled online that Shekinah has dated men for the their money, specifically the father of her 16-year-old daughter, Sofie. She wants to set the record straight: Those rumors that are "so far from the case."

"It's really upsetting, to be honest" she said. "I have heard that online, and it's just because of the age difference. [He's 27 years her senior.] They think, 'Oh, she was with an older man because he was probably wealthy.' But when I met her dad, he wasn't an old man. He was fit, he was attractive and he was not financially secure."

Shekinah worked for her ex, Berto Matta, 68, as a waitress in one of his restaurants. "The restaurant had so many problems. They were out of things every single night. They were struggling," she said. "I was aware he was having a lot of difficulties, but we developed a relationship."

They dated for about four years and she left him shortly after their daughter was born in 2008.

"We were living in a really cheap hotel, and it was just a nonstop struggle," she said. "I was on food stamps. I was fully reliant on him because I couldn't afford a car payment and stuff like that.

"It was the hardest time in my life," Shekinah said, noting she filed for bankruptcy when she was nine months pregnant with Sofie.

Things for Berto aren't as financially dire now as they once were. "He has gotten more financial freedom in recent years," she said. "So [Sofie's] in a nice boarding school now, and we split the cost of that. She's on a trip in Europe with him for the first time. They're going on a vacation."

But just because Berto has money now, doesn't mean that trickles down to Shekinah. "I don't benefit from that personally. I'm happy for her, but the whole time I was with him was just nothing but hardship."

Shekinah said she never got child support from Berto. "I'm not trying to trash him, but that's just the reality of the situation. If he wanted it to be a different story, then he should've shown me something different."

With her previous relationship more than a decade in the past, Shekinah is working to get a visa so Sarper can move to the U.S. But the process isn't easy. "They can deny you for no reason," she explained. "And then and if you question them at all, you get escorted out by security super quickly."

In the meantime, Shekinah is making the 13-hour trek to see Sarper in Istanbul every five weeks.
