Sharon Horgan to Headline New HBO Comedy, With Bad Sisters’ Fate TBD
HBO has inked a two-year first-look deal with BAFTA winner and Emmy-nominated actress/writer Sharon Horgan and her production company Merman.
As part of the deal, the cabler gave a straight-to-series order to a new comedy series from Horgan and Merman, with Horgan serving as writer, star and executive producer.

This yet-to-be-titled comedy will star Horgan as a 50-year-old divorcée on “a search for sex and love whilst juggling caring for her ailing parents and parenting her should-be grown up son.”
The HBO deal arrives as Horgan’s one-year pact with Apple TV+ ends. Over at the streamer, Horgan developed and starred in Bad Sisters, a black comedy that dropped its Season 2 finale this past Christmas Eve. Sources tell TVLine that Apple TV+ is discussing a possible Bad Sisters Season 3 even as Horgan reunites with HBO, where she previously sired Sarah Jessica Parker’s Divorce.
Horgan’s other TV writing credits also include (but are far from limited to!) Pulling, Catastrophe, Motherland and Shining Vale.
“We’re thrilled to be reunited with Sharon,” HBO comedy EVP Amy Gravitt said in a statement. “Her willingness to offer up her own experiences through the characters she creates makes us all feel a little less lonely, that is what sets her comedy apart so brilliantly. She also has such a sharp eye for material and a strong desire to shepherd other people’s stories, we’re looking forward to the new talent she will bring into the fold.”
Said Horgan, “I’m so happy to once again be working with [HBO CEO] Casey [Bloys], Amy, [drama DVP] Francesca [Orsi] and the team at HBO, and really excited that Merman get to continue to tell stories for a company that’s been home to some of the most iconic television shows ever created.”
Deadline first reported on Horgan’s new deal.
