Selena Gomez Explains Why She's Unable To Carry Children: 'I Had To Grieve'

Selena Gomez has shared a lot about her health over the past few years, including her health complications from lupus and being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Now, the 32-year-old opening up about a health complication she’s struggled with: not being able to carry her own children.

Selena shared this personal information in a new interview with Vanity Fair, making it clear that there a lot of emotions tied up in it. Here’s what the Only Murders in the Building star has said about this, plus where she’s at with plans to have her own family someday.

Will Selena Gomez be able to have children?

In the VF interview, Selena revealed that she’s not able to carry her own children. “I haven’t ever said this...but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” she said. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Selena didn't get into details about what those medical issues are, but she previously told Rolling Stone that she may not be able to have children because of medications she takes for bipolar disorder.

“That’s a very big, big, present thing in my life,” she said, adding, “however I’m meant to have them, I will.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean she can’t have children at all. Surrogacy may be an option for her, as well as adoption.

Does Selena Gomez want to be a mom?

Yes, Selena said she wants to be a mom. “I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,” she said.

Selena also said that she’s “really thankful” that there are other options for people “who are dying to be moms,” adding, “I’m one of those people.”

“I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different,” she continued. “At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

Selena has spoken up often about wanting to have a family. "I hope to be married and to be a mom," she said in August 2022, per Us Weekly. "Eventually, I’m going to be tired of all of this, so I’m probably just going to devote most of my life to philanthropy before I peace out...just keeping it real."

Does Selena Gomez have any conditions?

Yes, Selena has opened up about having several health issues. She’s lived with the autoimmune condition lupus for more than a decade. Selena received a kidney transplant from her actress and friend Francia Raisa in 2017, and her condition is now in remission.

She also shared in her 2022 documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. "I'm going to be very open with everybody about this: I've been to four treatment centers," she previously told Rolling Stone. "I think when I started hitting my early twenties is when it started to get really dark, when I started to feel like I was not in control of what I was feeling, whether that was really great or really bad."

But Selena has also shared that she's been able to manage both conditions with proper care and treatment.
