The costars play best friends struggling with their futures in director Gia Coppola's new drama

Jamie Lee Curtis and Pamela Anderson are Las Vegas veterans in The Last Showgirl.

The new drama from director Gia Coppola features Curtis, 66, and Anderson, 57, as best friends Annette and Shelly, two longtime Sin City residents who each have their own struggles.

As seen in this exclusive clip shared with PEOPLE, Annette, a former showgirl with a gambling problem, is working as a casino cocktail waitress. She’s abruptly cut from her shift in favor of two younger workers.

Shelly, meanwhile, has been performing in the Les Razzle Dazzle show for decades. When the topless revue is canceled by the resort owners, Shelly must decide what to do with the rest of her life.

Annette floats the idea of moving in with Shelly and paying rent, which Shelly shuts down.

The film is earning Anderson serious awards attention: She was nominated for a Gotham Award for outstanding lead performance in a film as well as a Golden Globe for best performance by a female actor in a motion picture – drama.

At the latter awards, the Baywatch icon is in a category featuring four Oscar winners: Angelina Jolie (Maria), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Tilda Swinton (The Room Next Door) and Kate Winslet (Lee), plus I’m Still Here star Feranda Torres is also nominated.

Curtis tells PEOPLE she signed on to make the movie after learning Anderson — whom she had never met — would play the lead role.

“I knew that this was going to give Pam that opportunity to be an artist. And I just wanted to be a part of it,” she says.

“I made horror movies when I was 19 years old, and I've waited a long time to be an artist. And I get to be an artist now,” says the Halloween franchise alum.

"I literally just wanted to be on the other side of a scene with her because I knew she was going to do what she does in the movie," Curtis adds of Anderson.

Curtis, who won an Oscar in 2023 for her work in Everything Everywhere All at Once, previously told Entertainment Weekly about her dramatic transformation for The Last Showgirl, which also stars Brenda Song, Billie Lourd and Kiernan Shipka.

The actress “immediately had a lot of ideas about what she would look like and what her backstory was," Curtis said of Annette. "I called my wig maker and we were off to the races."

“She has that leathered look,” Curtis added. "There is that term that is kind of a pejorative of, particularly, women that says they look like they were rode hard and put away wet.”

The Last Showgirl is in select theaters now before going wider Jan. 10.
