She’s been a symbol of girl power since the nineties – and Geri Halliwell-Horner is still championing the power of women nearly three decades later.

The former Spice Girl kicked off proceedings at Harper’s Bazaar’s International Women’s Day gala dinner, which took place at the Corinthia hotel in central London, giving an opening speech where she encouraged women to follow their aspirations.

Wearing a sleek white trouser suit, Halliwell-Horner told the crowds that she understands the pressure that successful women, forced to juggle child rearing and lucrative careers, often face.

“There’s a lot of pressure to be everything,” she said. “As women we are expected to work twice as hard, for half as much.

Halliwell-Horner added that women have a responsibility to lift each other up and see each other as collaborators rather than rivals. “I believe we can be everything, whatever it is right for you, whatever it looks like,” she said. “We are the inspiration.

“Let’s remember that every woman in this room, whatever your life looks like, all our actions and achievements inspire each other. We are pioneers of each generation in different ways. We lift each other – our sisters, daughters; all of our children, regardless of gender, are examples for each other too.

“Let’s celebrate those who came before us, champion those who stand beside us, and inspire those who will follow. When we lift each other up, we shape a world where anything is possible. If we can see it, we can be it.”

Halliwell-Horner also paid tribute to Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Lydia Slater as well as the brand’s first editor, Mary Booth, for creating a publication “that has always been a mirror of the times, showing us the power of representation and the boundless potential of women”.
