Do you know that Matt Foley lives in a van down by the river and that Mr. Pibb and Red Vines equals crazy delicious? Yeah, that's the ticket to being a Saturday Night Live superfan.

Now in its landmark 50th season and with more Emmys than any other TV show, SNL has cemented its place in pop culture history — one cowbell at a time. Created by Lorne Michaels, the sketch comedy institution debuted on Oct. 11, 1975, when Chevy Chase was first to utter the now legendary line, "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!"

The season 1 cast, known as the Not Ready for Prime Time Players, also included the likes of Dan Aykroyd, Jane CurtinGarrett MorrisLaraine Newman, and the late John Belushi and Gilda Radner. Over the decades, SNL's host roster has included some of Hollywood's biggest stars, while its own cast members have gone on to become A-listers themselves, including Eddie MurphyBill Murray, Adam Sandler, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Robert Downey Jr., Will Ferrell, Kristen WiigTina Fey, and many others. (Not to mention former writers like Conan O'Brien, Bob Odenkirk, Larry David, and Oscar-winning writer-director Adam McKay!)
