Sarah Michelle Gellar Says She’s Open to a Buffy Revival: ‘We Need Those Heroes More So Than Ever’
In the wake of Paramount+’s Dexter prequel series, Sarah Michelle Gellar says she is now open to reviving Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
“I always used to say no [to a reboot], because [Buffy is] in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said Saturday during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. “But watching [And Just Like That…] and seeing [Dexter: Original Sin], and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.'”

She said that the opportunities for a new series are abundant because Buffy is “its own universe.” She added, “In this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”
Gellar hasn’t always been keen to revive the iconic WB series, though. In 2023, our sister site IndieWire reported that the actress shut down the idea of a reboot during an interview with SFX Magazine.
“I am very proud of the show that we created, and it doesn’t need to be done,” she said. “We wrapped that up.” Gellar’s change of heart comes one day after the premiere of Dexter: Original Sin, the Dexter prequel in which the actress plays Dexter’s boss, CSI Chief Tanya Martin.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer debuted in 1997 on The WB and ran for seven seasons, jumping to UPN for its final two. It has since become a cultural touchstone and cult favorite among TV fans. In 2018, a Buffy reboot was reportedly in the works, with a Black actress set to play the titular role. But in 2022, executive producer Gail Berman announced the reboot was “on pause.”
