Sarah Michelle Gellar admits she got in 'a little bit of trouble' for “I Know What You Did Last Summer” set pic

The actress' husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., is set to star in the latest sequel to their 1997 film.

Since her last secret was discovered by a hook-wielding murderer, perhaps Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't the ideal keeper of confidential information.

Thankfully, Gellar's latest secret slip only landed her in a "little bit" of trouble. During a visit to Live with Kelly and Mark, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum recalled sharing a photo from the set of the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot — something she technically wasn't allowed to do.

“You would think that being in my position, I know what rules are on sets when they say closed sets, you know,” she joked, during her Tuesday appearance on the show. “So my husband’s starring in the movie and it was Thanksgiving so I took our kids to Australia to go out there and visit him. And I was sitting on set and I was like, ‘Oh what a great picture,’ and then I posted it.”

The photo in question was of a director's chair, with the title I Know What You DId Last Summer emblazoned on the back. Gellar tagged her husband, and former costar, Freddie Prinze Jr., joking about another franchise they starred in together with the caption, "Scooby Doo 3 coming soon…."

But her quippy joke had consequences.

"I found out that they hadn’t posted any pictures from the set yet — hadn’t announced they started filming,” she explained. “That was an ‘Oops! My bad!'”

When co-host Kelly Ripa pointed out that it was a blessing in disguise, given Gellar's instagram has a much larger following that the film's official account, the Cruel Intentions actress admitted that was in part because the movie's social media page was quickly created after her unplanned post. "Again, my bad," she added.

In her defense, Gellar said she was particularly excited to be on the film set given the emotional weight that she ascribes to the original film. "That's the movie Freddie and I met on. So it's like, it was really cool to bring our kids there," she said. "It was just such a special time."

EW confirmed in February 2023 that Sony was in talks with stars Prinze and Jennifer Love Hewitt to reprise their roles in the latest sequel. Gellar, whose character didn't survive the first film, previously told PEOPLE that she will be part of the film in an "unofficial" capacity, as the keeper of continuity. The sequel will also star franchise newcomers including Camila Mendes of Riverdale, Outer Banks' Madelyn Cline, the live-action Little Mermaid's Jonah Hauer-King, Stereophonic's Sarah Pidgeon, and Atlanta's Tyriq Withers.

The original film, an adaptation of Lois Duncan's 1973 novel of the same name, follows four teens bound by a tragic incident as they are terrorized by a hook-wielding murderer who has uncovered their darkest secret: That they accidentally killed someone while driving home from party. The film not only became a staple of the teen slasher genre but spawned a couple of sequels and a TV adaptation.

Hewitt recently reflected on the joy of potentially returning for the reboot, noting, "It is truly such an honor, at 45, to even be invited back. To be thought of in that way, to not just move on to the newer, better, younger versions, but [to be offered] to come back and play that part is really cool. We're trying really hard to make it work. We're so close, guys! I promise I'll make a fun announcement, and it'll be amazing."
