Sabrina Carpenter wears Madonna's iconic '90s Oscars dress to the MTV VMAs
Arriving at the 2024 MTV VMAs last night, Sabrina Carpenter paid tribute to one of the biggest pop icons of all time: Madonna.
The singer shimmered in a vintage strapless gown covered in glittering sequins, which had previously been worn by Madonna to the Oscars back in 1991. The Bob Mackie design had a romantic sweetheart neckline, which was embellished with silvery crystals.
Mackie originally custom-made the outfit for the 'Like a Virgin' singer after they collaborated on a Vanity Fair cover.
Carpenter continued the sparkle with layers upon layers of diamonds: droplet earrings, a dazzling necklace, and several rings. Even her elegant white manicure was encrusted with tiny gemstones.
As for glam, Carpenter went full Old Hollywood, emulating Madonna's original look, with metallic eyeshadow and a bold red lip. Her blonde hair was styled in similar bouncing Marilyn Monroe-esque curls.
Carpenter performed at the ceremony last night; other acts to take to the stage included Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, Chappell Roan, Halsey, Megan Thee Stallion (who was also this year’s host and a nominee), Lenny Kravitz, Rauw Alejandro, Karol G, Anitta, Benson Boone and Lisa.
Carpenter was among the 29 first-time VMAs nominees attending last night, and she led the pack as the most nominated of them, with six nods, for: Artist of the Year, Song of the Year (“Espresso”), Best Pop, Best Direction (“Please Please Please”), Best Editing (“Espresso”), and Best Art Direction (“Please Please Please”). She took home the prize for Song of the Year.
Carpenter has released six studio albums, but rose to international fame late last year when she began opening for friend Taylor Swift on Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour. Carpenter also performed at this year’s Coachella and on Saturday Night Live; later this month, she will kick off her album tour.
