'The Rookie' Fans Are Disappointed Over Thorsen's Season 7 Exit
This story contains spoilers from The Rookie season 7 episode 1, "The Shot," and parts of season 6.
The Rookie season 7 is officially back, and fans have thoughts about one character no longer being part of LAPD Mid-Wilshire.
The premiere episode of the new season aired on January 7 on ABC, and fans got to see John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and his rookie Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) discuss the departure of fellow rookie Aaron Thorsen (Tru Valentino). While the duo are out on duty making rounds throughout Los Angeles, Juarez celebrates the fact she only has 30 days left as a rookie and can now graduate from wearing only long sleeves with her uniform to the more comfortable short version. But as she stated it shouldn't have taken so long, she also gives Nolan some details about where Thorsen was at.
"Why did you make me wait so long to wear short sleeves?" Juarez exclaimed. "Aaron got them way earlier in his rookie year!"
"You had to earn them!" Nolan replied. "How is Aaron doing in North Hollywood, anyway?"
"He's settling in," Juarez responded. "Happy that no one at the station knows he was a patient of Blair's."
When fans caught on to The Rookie's choice of how to write Thorsen out of the series, they immediately went to social media to voice their opinions.
"The Rookie may be back but Aaron Thorsen isn’t:((," one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "Me when I find out Aaron Thorsen is not returning for season 7 of The Rookie," another penned. "Me when The Rookie comes back and Aaron Thorsen still isn't on my screen by the end of 7x01," a different viewer added.
As fans may remember, Thorsen was mandated to go through therapy after experiencing PTSD from being shot in the final episode of The Rookie season 5. He then got sent to Blair for treatment, but the two developed a romantic bond while she secretly gave antagonist Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan) information about police activity that could be used to jeopardize LAPD operations. Even though Thorsen's exit wasn't explained in the way fans wanted, there is always a chance more will be revealed in future episodes.
It's also important to note that Tru actually exited The Rookie in August 2024, with TVLine making the official announcement. As for whether Tru — and subsequently, Thorsen — will be seen on the show again, showrunner Alexi Hawley said the door is always open for him.
"Tru [Valentino] is a great actor, and he was a huge part of our show for several seasons, and so we'd love to have him back in some capacity," he told Screen Rant. "It just ultimately felt like, creatively, for where the show was going, that we needed to pivot a bit. But he's still very much alive in our universe."
We'll be crossing our fingers to see what Thorsen's future holds!
