Here’s something we never thought we would say: we’re excited for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. Why? Because a certain Robyn Lawley – Australian plus-size supermodel and marie claire covergirl – stars in their legendary bikini-filled photoshoot.
Lawley, who has been crowned one of SI’s Rookies of the Year (previous winners have included Kate Upton, Gigi Hadid and John Legend’s wife Chrissie Teigen) wears a teeny, tiny orange python bikini in the photoshoot, which was lensed by Australian photographer Ben Watts (you know, Naomi’s brother) in a national park in America.
Lawley’s picture is incredible, and not just because she looks like a bombshell of the Bond girl variety in it. Lawley, 25, is the first so-called "plus-size" model to appear in the history of the Sports Illustrated issue.
“I’m beyond ecstatic to join the amazing SI Swimsuit family,” Lawley wrote on her Instagram page. “If someone told me at the beginning of my career that this would happen I would [have] said ‘tell em [he’s] dreamin’… Thankyou [to] the whole SI awesome peeps for embracing who I am.”
This year also marks the appearance of another plus-sized model between the pages of Sports Illustrated’s pages. Plus-size swimsuit brand SwimsuitsForAll placed an ad in the magazine, launching their campaign #CurvesInBikinis starring 26-year old American model Ashley Graham.
