Robert De Niro Teases ‘Out of Touch’ Kelly Ripa About TV Shows

Robert De Niro teased Kelly Ripa for being “out of touch” as the two were discussing children’s television programs during a recent episode of Live with Kelly and Mark.

The two-time Academy Award winner appeared on the daytime talk show on Thursday, Feb. 20, to discuss his starring role in the new Netflix thriller series Zero Day. But first, De Niro’s youngest daughter came up in conversation as they were chatting about his appearance last weekend at Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special, a three-hour event that celebrated the long-running NBC sketch comedy show.

When Live co-host Mark Consuelos asked the Goodfellas star if he attended the after-party for the SNL event, De Niro, 81, confirmed that he did and felt “a little tired” as a result.

“I don’t stay up that late, ever,” he admitted.

Ripa reminded their live audience that De Niro is the proud father of a toddler named Gia, who will turn 2 in April. The Casino star shares Gia, his seventh child, with girlfriend Tiffany Chen.

De Niro then revealed that, as the parent of a young child, he watches some programs that are created for children. “I watch Ms. Rachel and The Wiggles,” he said, a confession that sparked surprised laughter among some viewers in the live audience. "That takes my mind off everything else.”

Ripa was not familiar with Ms. Rachel, a Netflix series starring YouTuber Rachel Accurso. “Ms. Rachel? Like, I don’t know what Ms. Rachel is,” Ripa said.

“Well. You’re out of touch,” De Niro teased.

The mom of three pointed out that her kids “are grown” before telling the Taxi Driver actor, "You’re right. I’m totally out of touch. What’s Ms. Rachel? Should I be watching it?”

De Niro urged Ripa to “look her up” before sharing an anecdote about coming across a stranger streaming Ms. Rachel on their phone for their child to watch. The show “kept the child quiet and engrossed,” he said.

De Niro went on to explain that the show includes “‘A, B, C, D,’ all of the rhymes, nursery rhymes, everything—all of that sweet stuff,” when Ripa asked for further clarification. “It’s nice,” he added.
