Robbie Williams Jokes He 'Wants to Be Gay,' Calls Wife a 'Beard' in Bizarre Interview 20 Years After Suing Paper over Rumors
The Take That star addressed rumors about his sexuality in an interview with 'The Guardian,' 20 years after suing a tabloid that claimed he had a "gay lover"
Robbie Williams is looking back on those rumors about his sexuality.
In a Dec. 13 interview with The Guardian, the Take That singer, 50, recalled feeling "annoyed" by the 2004 rumors that swirled after an outlet published a story headlined "Robbie's Secret Gay Lover." Williams sued the tabloid for libel and won damages as well as an apology.
“I was more sad," Williams said. "Not about gay accusations because, look, I’ve done everything but suck a c---. Honestly, you’ve never met somebody that wants to be gay as much as me.”
“I’m a Port Vale fan and it’s like somebody going, ‘Well, you’re a Liverpool fan,' ” he said, using a sports analogy to explain further. “And me saying, ‘No, I’m not, I’m a Port Vale fan.' When somebody says you’re a Liverpool fan a hundred times, it’s like, ‘I’m not a f---ing Liverpool fan, why do people think I’m a Liverpool fan?'"
“You want to be an ally while at the same time protecting your own authenticity and your own life,” Willaims continued. “Besides, if I want to suck a c---, I’ll suck a c---. Who’s going to f---ing stop me? My wife? The beard!”
Williams married American actress Ayda Field in 2010. The couple shares four children.

The '90s heartthrob previously addressed his sexuality in 2016 in a cover interview with Attitude.
“I was raised in a society where gay was the thing you leveled at somebody you wanted to hurt the most," he said at the time. "So then being exposed to this world that I loved being a part of… I took my first ecstasy at a gay club [and] had the most incredible time.”
“...because of the homophobia that there is out there, I was sort of left as a 21 year old going, ‘Actually, I don’t hate the gays… so does that mean that I’m gay, too? I was 21 or 22 and I was like, ‘Oh, that must mean that I’m somewhat gay, in some sort of way,' " continued Williams.
Williams said he has "big male crushes" often, "But I just can’t do the c---. I don’t enjoy looking at mine that much. So I can’t get 'round that bit. And if I could, I would have because I like sex. I would have liked being able to have it on tap,” he told the outlet.
The former boy band member will be portrayed as a CGI monkey version of himself in the upcoming biopic Better Man from The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey.
Better Man hits theaters on Christmas Day.
