Rob Lowe reflects on 'briefly' having 'a thing' with Demi Moore: 'I'm not telling tales out of school'

"Any time you put young twentysomething men and women together, hookups are inevitable."

Some flings are Moore memorable than others — just ask Rob Lowe.

The 9-1-1: Lone Star actor reflected on his short-lived romance with his St. Elmo's Fire costar Demi Moore in a recent interview on Kelly Ripa's Let's Talk Off Camera podcast. Ripa asked Lowe if the cast of the 1985 post-college drama — which also included Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Andrew McCarthy — all dated one another.

"Big, big sex orgy on the set of St. Elmo's Fire," Lowe joked in response. "I mean, Demi and I briefly, I'm not telling tales out of school, we briefly had a thing, and then Emilio and Demi I think were engaged." (Estevez and Moore were indeed engaged in the mid-1980s, but called off the wedding in late 1986).

Moore previously reflected on her relationship with Lowe in her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, after Lowe wrote about it in his own book, 2011's Stories I Only Tell My Friends. "Memory — especially memory clouded by drugs — is a funny thing," the actress wrote. "In his own memoir, Rob suggests that we had some kind of hot-and-heavy romance; I can vaguely recall one ill-advised late night together, but I'm grateful to him for the complimentary descriptions of our youth."

There didn't seem to be any bad blood between Lowe and Moore after their fling, as the actress still invited him to her wedding to Bruce Willis in 1987. "We all were at her wedding to Bruce," Lowe remembered during his conversation with Ripa. "Biggest wedding I'd ever been to up until then. I'd never been to a wedding like that. There were, I think, two soundstages rented and bands, and it was so fun and so amazing."

Lowe also noted that it should come as no surprise that dalliances sometimes occur between young people in close proximity. "Look, any time you put young twentysomething men and women together, hookups are inevitable," he said. "And I don't think that has changed.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Lowe said that his favorite project from his early career was his other Brat Pack movie with Moore. "Of all of the stuff I did in the '80s, if I had to pick one, it would for sure be About Last Night," he revealed.

Lowe and Moore are still in communication with one another because of a potential reunion project. "We're very much in contact now because we are actively trying to do [the] St. Elmo's Fire sequel," Lowe said. "We're on a text thread. She has a pseudonym that she goes by, which I can't say, because then it wouldn't be a pseudonym."

Moore confirmed that she'd had discussions about a St. Elmo's Fire sequel in an interview with Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. "I have had a couple of sit-down meetings, and I think it would be great if we can come up with a story that I think holds up," she said. "Because you never want to diminish. I think, yes. For the most part, my understanding is that so far everyone is pretty much open and on board. We'll see, but, yes!"
