Ricky Gervais Pitches Obscene Jokes for Golden Globes
It’s been five long years since comedian Ricky Gervais last hosted the Golden Globe Awards. But that hasn’t stopped him from thinking about what he might say from the stage if he were hosting the awards show for a sixth time this Sunday.
“Sat in the bath wondering about what I would say if I were hosting The Golden Globes on Sunday. It’s been a pretty good year for material,” the original creator and star of The Office posted on X Friday evening before sharing a couple of risqué jokes with his followers.
“Hello, and welcome to the 82nd Golden Globe awards. What a year it’s been. Hundreds of entertainers jumped at the chance to go to The Vatican to meet The Pope. Many from Hollywood,” Gervais wrote, referring to the summit of comedians Pope Francis assembled last June. The famous atheist did not attend, but his frequent (and estranged) collaborator Stephen Merchant was in attendance.
Then came the punchline: “Obviously they weren’t content with only being part of the 2nd biggest pedo ring in the world…”

The comedian followed that bit up with crude joke aimed at Justin Timberlake’s drunk driving arrest: “If he’d have gone to jail he’d have heard the words ‘Sexy Back’ a lot more often.”
Gervais made a name for himself as the Golden Globes host willing to go harder at the Hollywood elite than anyone else. This year, comedian Nikki Glaser—fresh off her killer set at Netflix’s roast of Tom Brady—is taking the reins and is expected to deliver some tough lines.
But as she said in a new interview this week, fans should temper their expectations.
“I’m not gonna go so hard that anyone’s gonna be offended,” Glaser warned. “I’ve made a point not to, and that’s not to disappoint anyone who’s hoping I’m going to pull a Ricky Gervais. I’m not Ricky Gervais. This isn’t my last Golden Globes, this is my first one. He really went hard on his last one. He was ready to burn some bridges [because] it didn’t matter anymore.”
And he’s still going.
