Princess Diana's nieces, Lady Amelia Spencer and Lady Eliza Spencer, made a statement at the British Fashion Awards on Dec. 2 — and if their chic black gowns looked familiar, there's a reason for that.

The twins, 32, both wore off-the-shoulder black floor-length dresses, expertly channeling their late aunt's iconic revenge dress that she wore in June 1994.

Amelia's black column gown featured a deep v-neck and some sparkle on the thin straps, while Eliza's featured more of a sleeve with a sculptural detail on the bodice. Each wore a diamond necklace, earrings, bracelets and rings. No matter how you look at it, though, both Spencers took a page out of Princess Diana's style book.

Princess Diana wore the famous "revenge dress" in 1994 when she stepped out for a gala at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Her dress was a body-hugging off-the-shoulder number with an asymmetrical hemline and chiffon train. She also wore it with a bold necklace. The dress earned its title because Princess Diana wore it the same night then-Prince Charles confessed on national television that he had been unfaithful to her.

As reported by The New York Times, in an ITV documentary that aired a year and a half following the couple's split, Queen Elizabeth's eldest son and heir said he remained faithful to Diana "until it became irretrievably broken down," confirming rumors of his affair with now-wife Camilla Parker-Bowles. "It is a deeply regrettable thing to happen, but it does happen, and unfortunately, in this case, it has happened," Charles said.

The twins, daughters of Diana's brother Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, grew up in South Africa and told Tatler in 2021 about their special connection to their aunt Diana as children.

Princess Diana was "incredibly warm, maternal and loving," Eliza said, adding, "She always made an effort to connect with us as children and had a talent for reading children's hearts."

"We always just knew her as our aunt," Eliza said. "Growing up in South Africa, I really had very little idea of how significant she was in the world until I was much older."

"As a child, I realized the enormity of the loss for my father and family," she added. "It was only later that I came to understand the significance of the loss of her as a figure in the world."
