Queen kept treasured mementoes of Philip close during funeral

The Queen kept Prince Philip close during his funeral service by carrying treasured mementoes from their 73 years together inside her handbag.

Her Majesty reportedly carried one of Philip's trademark white pocket squares made by his Savile Row tailors Kent & Haste, according to the Daily Mail.

She also carried a small photograph of the two of them together, which was believed to have been taken in Malta, a place of great significance for the couple.

The newlyweds lived on the island in Villa Guardamangia, on the outskirts of the capital Valletta, between 1949 and 1951 when Philip was stationed there as a naval officer.

The couple returned often, including to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in 2007, with the Queen describing it as one of the best times of her life, as she was able to live "normally".

The Queen often carries precious objects in her handbags, including a collection of good luck charms given to her by her children and grandchildren.

The monarch left a personal, handwritten message to Philip alongside a wreath of white lilies, white roses and white freesia chosen by her.

During the ceremony, the Queen sat alone during the service, wiping away tears with her head bowed.

She shared a private moment with Prince Philip before the funeral, her final moment alone with her husband, before the procession began.

Prince Philip passed away on Friday April 9 at the age of 99.
