Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards 2010 Winners Announced

The 2010 Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards winners were announced last night at the Museum of Contemporary Art, where the who's who of Sydney's art, fashion and film scene gathered to celebrate Australia's young emerging talent.



Each winner received $10,000 in cash and flights in conjunction with a 12- month mentorship in their respective field. Amidst thousands of submissions from across Australia, SOYA 2010's winners were revealed as follows:

Fashion: Dion Lee, rising star of Australian fashion, to be mentored by Nicky and Simone Zimmermann.

Film: Ariel Kleiman, who adds her SOYA to an honourable mention at Sundance and an AFI Award nomination.

Industrial and Object Design: Alex Gilmour, who creates modern, classic design pieces.

Music: Freya Berkhout and Alyx Dennison from Kyu, the Sydney-based duo making strides in the music world.

Photography: Penny Lane, a Melbourne based freelance photographer who will receiving mentoring by legendary photographer Tony Mott.

Visual Arts: Clare Peak, whose work explores the nature of perception, observation and interpretation. She will be mentored by Elizabeth Ann Macgregor.

Visual Communication: Motherbird, who's forging a new path in design with art direction, branding, print, photography and illustration.

People's Choice Award: For the first time, a SOYA People's Choice Award was also awarded to Gavin Bufton, an Industrial & Object Designer from Victoria, who received $2,000 in Qantas flights.
