Qantas flight attendant leads Taylor Swift singalong during Melbourne flight

While some fans have praised the ‘iconic’ act, others have described it as ‘rubbish’.

Excitement levels are clearly sky high for Taylor Swift to bring her record-breaking Eras Tour to Australia this week. Fans have travelled from all over the country to watch the megastar kick off the Australian leg at Melbourne’s MCG on Friday night, which is set to be the biggest stadium show she’s ever performed.

While it’s expected that Swifties doing a road trip to attend the concert would be blasting Taylor Swift in the car, Qantas passengers flying from Perth to Melbourne have also been treated to a surprise singalong.

In a video shared to TikTok on Thursday, cabin crew member Paul Pillati is seen encouraging the fans onboard to sing along to the bridge of Taylor’s 2019 hit ‘Cruel Summer’.

“We’re going to sing along to ‘Cruel Summer’,” he says in the clip, which was posted by his daughter Caitlin.

“‘Cruel Summer’, ‘Cruel Summer’. You know it? You know it?”

After walking up and down the aisle to hype up the passengers, Paul counts them in and begins to dance along to the a cappella rendition complete with harmonies and ad-libs.

He then applauds the group but suggests the forward section of the plane will do an even better job.

The video ends with a sweet photo of Paul posing with a friendship bracelet one passenger made for him on the flight. Swifties around the world have been making, wearing and swapping friendship bracelets at Taylor’s concerts after being inspired by a line in her song ‘You’re On Your Own Kid’ where she sings: “So, make the friendship bracelets”.

Viewers divided by the 'iconic' act

The video has quickly racked up over 200,000 views and plenty of comments, including one from Qantas’ official account that says Paul’s performance was “nothing less than ICONIC”.

“The hype man we all need. Protect him at all costs,” one fan wrote, while another added, “Why did that make me cry! I love Swifties so much”.

“I hope Miss Swift sees this!” someone else shared, followed by a different user who said, “This is so fun. Not a Swifty but infectious excitement is always fun”.

While some fans said they would have loved to have been on the flight, others admitted they felt the complete opposite.

“I would literally try and open the door,” one person commented, with someone else writing, “Is this how sky diving was invented?”.

“I would be making a complaint, they shouldn’t be subjecting other passengers to this rubbish,” a third remarked.

Virgin Australia joins in on the Eras Tour hype

It appears Qantas isn’t the only airline hyping up Taylor Swift fans on their journey to the concert.

Another video shared to TikTok on Thursday shows a Virgin Australia cabin crew member including several references to the hitmaker’s songs during their in-flight announcement.

“To all of our Swifties on board, your ‘Wildest Dreams’ are about to come true,” they said. “So be ‘Fearless’, and ‘Shake It Off’ with ‘Style’ at the Eras Tour.”

The Eras Tour will see Taylor perform in Melbourne this Friday, Saturday and Sunday night before she puts on four consecutive concerts at Sydney’s Accor Stadium from next Friday.
