Yahoo Lifestyle PSA: Charli XCX just wore our fave jewellery brand, July Child
Back in 2017, she didn’t know it yet, but the jewellery Sinéad Flood was hand-making in her mum’s kitchen in Manchester would go on to be worn by pop queens Chappell Roan, Dua Lipa and most recently, Charli XCX. The Brat trailblazer kicked off her UK tour in Flood's hometown of Manchester last night [Wednesday 27 November] and took to the stage wearing a white baby tee and black leather belted knickers, accessorised with July Child's Cosmic Girl ring.
“Our Cosmic Girl ring is our most sought-after sell-out piece – it perfectly captures that girlie 1990s aesthetic our community loves us for,” brand founder, Flood, says. It’s easy to see why the designs have caught the eye of some of the coolest A-listers around. The sparkly, nostalgia-fuelled designs are TDF, drawing on retro, hyper-feminine pop culture icons including Sailor Moon, Barbie and Polly Pocket.
July Child began as a simple stockist website, hosting a curated selection of other jewellery designers. But Flood explains, “I couldn’t find pieces I wanted to wear, so I designed my own brand collection, Daughter by July Child, in 2020. I’m always inspired by playful, joyful memories of my 1990s childhood, so we created demi-fine dopamine jewels with lots of gummy gems and enamel. Life felt so serious in 2020, so it was important to inject sparkle into how we accessorised. There is a big sprinkling of humour throughout everything we do, down to our marketing.”
So, what’s next? “We’ve hosted pop-ups around the UK this year, and thousands of people came out to support us – we have a really powerful and inclusive community around the brand, which I’m so proud of,” says Flood.
Beyond that, she is sustainably minded, with a goal to eventually use entirely recycled metals in her production process. July Child rapidly sold out after launching with American retailer, Nordstrom, in April 2024, so a focus on US expansion is also in the works.
“We’ve always set out with a mission to just be the absolute best in our niche – the only competition is ourselves,” she muses. We’ll be wearing her designs with our Christmas and New Year's Eve party dresses *and* we’ll be stealing that line as our New Year affirmation.
