Princess Mary devastated after death of Prince Henrik

Tasmanian-born Princess Mary and her husband, Prince Frederik, are reeling after the death of Denmark’s Prince Henrik.

"His Royal Highness Prince Henrik died Tuesday, February 13 at 23:18 peacefully in his sleep at Fredensborg Palace", the palace said in a statement.

The 83-year-old prince was surrounded by his wife Queen Margrethe and the couple’s two beloved sons, Prince Frederick and Prince Joachim.

The news of his passing comes after the palace revealed in a statement yesterday that the prince had left hospital and returned to Fredensborg Castle, where he wished to spend his final days.

Princess Mary, her husband Prince Frederik and their four children, were photographed arriving at the hospital on Tuesday, where they accompanied the prince back to Fredensborg Castle.

The Danish Palace confirmed that the Prince’s condition was very ‘serious’.

The 83-year-old has been in-and-out of hospital for the past few years, however last month he was diagnosed with pneumonia on a trip to Egypt.

Then it was revealed last week that Prince Henrik was diagnosed with a benign tumour and he was already battling with dementia.

However, things turned serious over the weekend, when Prince Frederik was forced to return from the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang to be with his ailing father.

Then on Sunday, Princess Mary was pictured bringing her two eldest children into hospital to visit their grandfather.

Prince Henrik lived a very colourful life, known for speaking his mind and never quite got over his title remaining prince instead of being changed to king.

He made headlines last year when he claimed in an interview that he didn’t want to be buried alongside his wife because she never made him King Consort.

The BBC reported at the time that Queen Margrethe ‘accepted her husband’s decision’.
