Will Princess Märtha Louise of Norway Wear a Tiara for Her Wedding to Shaman Durek?
The royal, who is set to marry Durek on Aug. 31, is certainly no stranger to a sparkler
Tiara watch is on for Princess Märtha Louise of Norway as her Aug. 31 wedding day approaches.
King Harald and Queen Sonja's daughter is set to marry Shaman Durek Verrett at Hotel Union in Geiranger, Norway, sparking speculation about whether she'll wear a tiara or not.
So far, Princess Märtha Louise's bridal style remains a complete secret beyond a sliver of info from Hello! magazine, which is exclusively covering the nuptials (and not without controversy). The outlet said its upcoming coverage will include the bride's arrival in her "breathtaking wedding gown," but there was no mention of a headtopper — leaving royal watchers to look to the past for possible clues about her look.
Princess Märtha Louise's wedding to Durek, an American "6th generation shaman" whose website references a celebrity clientele, will be her second marriage, and she wore a tiara the first time that she tied the knot. For her May 24, 2002 wedding to author and playwright Ari Behn, Märtha Louise shimmered in a replica of Queen Maud's Pearl Tiara when the two exchanged vows in Trondheim, Norway.
According to The Court Jeweller, the original diamond and pearl tiara had been in the family for generations until it was shockingly stolen in 1995, when it was sent to London for a cleaning at Garrard. The sparkler was never recovered, and the luxury jeweler remade the tiara for the Norwegian royals, which is what Märtha Louise wore 22 years ago.
Märtha Louise, 52, and Behn went on to welcome daughters Maud Angelica, 21, Leah Isadora, 19, and Emma Tallulah, 15, and split in 2016. Their divorce was finalized the following year, and in 2019, Behn died by suicide at age 47. Following her ex's death, Märtha Louise was open about dealing with depression.
As she looks ahead to her wedding, the princess bride could take a page from her mother Queen Sonja's style files. On Aug. 29, 1968, Sonja Haraldsen wore white flowers in her hair with a veil when she married Crown Prince Harald, the future King of Norway, Royal Central reported.

Throughout the years, Princess Märtha Louise has worn several other tiaras from the royal family's vault for special occasions. Märtha Louise most recently glittered in King Olav’s Gift Tiara at the gala dinner for her niece, Princess Ingrid Alexandra (who follows Crown Prince Haakon in the direct line of succession to the throne) at the Royal Palace in Oslo in June 2022.
She attended the event with Durek, just days after they announced their engagement and just over three years after taking their relationship public in May 2019.
Princess Märtha Louise sweetly received King Olav's Gift Tiara as an 18th birthday present from her grandfather, King Olav, The Court Jeweller reported, and the fan blog described it as her "primary tiara." Another repeat tiara in her rotation is the Norwegian Amethyst Parure Tiara, which she wore Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden's royal wedding in 2010 and, more recently, at the state banquet in Oslo honoring the visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands in 2021.
Even further back in her tiara-wearing history, Märtha Louise wore the Maltese Cross Bandeau to the Swedish state visit to Norway in 1993. Queen Sonja, 87, has also worn the adjustable headpiece in a bolder way — with crosses affixed to the front.
Princess Märtha Louise's potential tiara wear will likely come down to personal preference when she gets married this weekend. In November 2022, she relinquished her royal role, and at the time, the Royal House of Norway said the decision was made in order for her to more freely pursue other interests without the restrictions of being affiliated with the crown. The court said that the royal would retain her princess title and was always welcome at family events.
Speaking to Hello! ahead of the wedding in a joint interview with her future husband, Märtha Louise revealed how, when it came to walking down the aisle again, meeting Durek changed everything.
