Even royals can experience decision fatigue when shopping for Christmas gifts for their loved ones. Prince William is no exception, and revealed that while he and wife Kate Middleton were in the early stages of dating, he landed on an odd gift that he later understood to be a weird choice.

“I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once. She’s never let me forget that,” the Prince of Wales admitted on the Christmas Day episode of That Peter Crouch Podcast on BBC Radio Five Live, per The Mirror. Thankfully, Middleton appeared to be a good sport about it and it didn't affect the rest of their relationship at the time.

“That was early on in the courtship that was—I think that sealed the deal,” William joked during the episode. “It didn’t go well. Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars, it seemed like a good idea at the time.”

William's binoculars gift isn't too far off from royal traditions. The royals "love doing gag gift exchanges and a Sandringham walkabout,” a source told Us Weekly. “They don’t do anything extravagant for gifts and do more funny gifts that make each other laugh."

While the binoculars might not have been a gag gift, the Prince of Wales's mother, Princess Diana, did instill a spirit of a left of field gift in him from a young age.

"The weekend before Christmas, the three of them [Diana, William, and Prince Harry] would disappear into the sitting room and you could hear the squeals and laughter coming out," Diana's longtime butler Paul Burrell said recently to Marie Claire. "Of course, Diana was very jokey and she would put rude things in there to embarrass them. William had a calendar one year with naked ladies on it just to make him blush and it worked."
