While Christmas is generally a quieter and more private time for the royal family, other than a few traditional public outings, things could be a little different this year.

Royal commentator Omid Scobie has revealed William and Kate may be the ones to ‘break tradition’ in making a few big announcements over the holiday period.

“There was a briefing at Kensington Palace just this week where they gave us a number of new announcements that will be coming out over the holiday period,” he said on ABC's Heirpod podcast.

“It's a smart decision, it's a quiet time of the year. It is a great time to announce things.”

“We will be hearing about a new initiative from Prince William and some other news as well.”

What that ‘other’ news is exactly still remains to be seen.

The royal expert added next year is set to be a big one for Kate, who will be really focused on her “early years development”.

“That is something she has been involved in for a long time now,” he said. “It has all been bitty for anyone who follows this. Apparently 2020 is a year when it is all tied together. So, yes, a busy year for them.”

Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s Christmas debut

It comes after it was revealed The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s two oldest children - Prince George and Princess Charlotte - will take part in the traditional walk to church from the Sandringham estate on Christmas Day.

George, six, and Charlotte, four, who both attend at St. Thomas’s Battersea, will join other senior royals on the stroll to the St Mary Magdalene church in Sandringham, Norfolk, a source has told The Sun.

As in previous years, there will be an opportunity for photos outside of the church, where royal fans annually camp out overnight in order to catch a glimpse of the royals.

“It will be so sweet. George and Charlotte will make their Christmas debut, as long as they're both on good form on the day,” a royal source told the publication.

“It’s the picture all royal fans want to see. The royals walking to church on Christmas Day is a rite of passage and so William and Kate didn’t want to expose their children too early, but they feel they’re old enough now.”

Harry and Meghan’s Canadian Christmas

Meanwhile Harry and Meghan will be spending their Christmas break in Canada, a palace spokesperson has confirmed.

The royals flew to Canada with their son Archie, seven months, last month and have been spending their low-key holiday catching up with friends in the country.

According to the Daily Mail, Meghan's mother Doria Ragland will fly in from Los Angeles to spend Christmas with the Harry, 35, Meghan and Archie.

“As has been reported, Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are spending private family time in Canada,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.

“The decision to base themselves in Canada reflects the importance of this Commonwealth country to them both.

“The Duke of Sussex has been a frequent visitor to Canada over many years, and it was also home to The Duchess for seven years before she became a member of the Royal Family.

“They are enjoying sharing the warmth of the Canadian people and the beauty of the landscape with their young son.”

Meghan, 38, previously lived in Toronto while she filmed TV 'Suits' and has a number of close friends in Canada.

A number of US based pals have also reportedly been travelling to Canada to visit the royals.

It comes after it was confirmed the Sussexes would be skipping the Queen’s traditional Christmas festivities this year in favour of a more quieter holiday season.
