Prince Philip is back on the road, but without a seatbelt
Prince Philip is back on the road after being involved in a crash which left the 97-year-old ‘shaken’ but luckily uninjured.
Just a matter of days after the accident, the Duke of Edinburgh was photographed behind the wheel, and had to be spoken to by UK police because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.
A photo showing the royal driving a newly delivered Land Rover near the royal residence in Sandringham sparked the interest of authorities. Norfolk Police said “suitable words of advice have been given to the driver.”
The warning given to the Duke of Edinburgh was “in line with our standard response when being made aware of such images showing this type of offence.”
Philip left ‘shaken’ by car crash
Prince Philip was left ‘very shocked and shaken’ after his Land Rover flipped and collided with another car near the Sandringham Estate last week.
He was unharmed in the incident, and was taken back to the residence, where he was given the all-clear by a royal doctor.
Why was Prince Philip, 97, driving?
The question raised by many at the time, was why is 97-year-old Philip driving on a public road?
According to Buckingham Palace, the Duke holds a valid driver’s licence.
Unlike the Queen – who, thanks to her powers as the Sovereign, is the only person in Britain who does not need a driver’s licence to get behind the wheel – Prince Philip is required to adhere to the regular checks and balances when it comes to renewing a licence.
The UK’s DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) requires drivers to renew their licence every three years after they reach the age of 70, however there is no maximum age at which anyone can hold a licence.
