Prince Harry Offers Rare Comment About Moving on After Mother Princess Diana's Death

Prince Harry was 12 when his mother Princess Diana passed away in a car accident, and he has only publicly talked about her death and his personal journey with grief a few times since.

But recently, Harry shared a rare comment about how he dealt with Diana's death, opening up about grief to a widow who lost her husband in Afghanistan and had to break the news to her young child.

In a video released in honor of the U.K.'s Armed Forces Day, Harry visited with Nikki Scott, the founder of the charity Scotty's Little Soldiers, with Nikki telling him the story of losing her husband Corporal Lee Scott and having to tell their son Kai, 5, what happened. Nikki also mentioned Harry's loss of his mother and what he shared about the experience in his book Spare.

Reflecting on experiencing such a huge loss as a child, Harry told her, "You convince yourself that the person you've lost wants you, or you need to be sad for as long as possible to prove to them that they are missed. But then there's this realization of, no, they must want me to be happy."

Going on, he elaborated on the particular grief kids experience, saying that they sometimes think, "I don't want to talk about it because it will make me sad, but once realizing if I do talk about it, and I'm celebrating their life, then actually, things become easier.'"

In a 2017 interview with The Telegraph, Harry shared that he "shut down" after Diana's death, and it was only when he was 28 that he finally began to address his grief.

Fans appreciated seeing the earnest side of Harry in the new interview, with people in the comments calling it a "sad but beautiful" conversation and saying, "What an incredible interview between two people who are sharing their grief to help others going through that process. Truly inspirational."

Harry became a global ambassador for Scotty's Little Soldiers last November and spent a full day with the organization and little kids supported by the charity during a visit in May.
