The Duke of Sussex has met Donald Trump for the first time, following the US president’s comments about his wife Meghan.

Prince Harry, 34, was among the royals who accompanied the Queen for a private lunch with the president and wife Melania at Buckingham Palace.

The Trumps were then given a tour of exhibits from the Royal Collection relating to America.

When Trump, 72, found out the former American actress had described him as “misogynistic,” he said: “I didn’t know she was nasty.”

His remarks came just days before he arrived in the UK for his three-day state visit.

Meghan, 37, will not meet the Trumps during their stay as she is currently on maternity leave, following the birth of her baby son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

Strained relationship

There was always going to be potential for awkwardness between Harry and Trump, even before his comments about Meghan.

It’s been reported that Donald pursued Harry’s mother Princess Diana, following her divorce from Prince Charles in 1996.

One of Diana’s confidants was broadcaster and journalist Selina Scott, who claimed the former businessman bombarded her with flowers at her apartment.

She wrote a piece in The Sunday Times in 2015, about Trump’s advances towards the princess, when he was still married to his second wife Marla Maples.

“Trump clearly saw Diana as the ultimate trophy wife,” she wrote.

“As the roses and orchids piled up at her apartment she became increasingly concerned about what she should do. It had begun to feel as if Trump was stalking her.”

Selina claimed that Diana said Trump, “he gives me the creeps.”

Twitter words

The then-business mogul has also made some distasteful comments on Twitter about Harry’s sister-in-law Kate Middleton in 2012, after photographs of the duchess sunbathing topless were published in a French magazine.

Three-day tour

The US president and First Lady arrived at London Stansted airport this morning and were greeted by Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and US ambassador to the UK Woody Johnson.

They were met by the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall on the lawn of Buckingham Palace, as they stepped off the Marine One aircraft. They were then taken up the steps of the West Terrace to be welcomed by the Queen.

The national anthems of the US and the UK were played, before the president and Prince Charles inspected a Guard of Honour formed by Nijmegen Company, Grenadier Guards.

In the evening the Trumps and the Royal Family attended a state banquet at Buckingham Palace.
