Beat Blisters

5 ways to prevent this painful problem.

By Michele Stanten

A bad case of blisters can knock you off your training schedule. Try these preventive measures:

Find the right shoe. Buy shoes that fit properly. Wearing the wrong shoe—whether it's too small or too large—causes friction, and this rubbing can create blisters. And ensure the shoes fit both feet because most of us have one foot that's larger than the other.

Wear the right socks. Choose socks made from synthetic fabrics that 'wick' away moisture from the skin. Polyester or polypropylene blends work better than cotton socks, which can bunch up and retain sweat.
Grease up. Apply a sport-specific lubricant (available at sports stores) to blister-prone areas before walking. Avoid petroleum jelly—it tends to melt.

Trim 'em. Cut toenails so they don't rub against the toe box of your shoe or an adjacent toe.

Act fast. When you feel a 'hot spot' on your foot, do something about it straightaway. Remove your shoe and cover the affected area with an adhesive bandage.

If you have chronic blistering and these tips don'’t provide enough relief, visit your local sports store and have the staff assess your choice of shoes.
