While Hollywood celebrates monikers as obscure as Blue Ivy, North, Cricket and Kaius, it seems we Aussies are more restrained in our choice of names

Tradition trumped tacky in the annual list of names released by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages as Australians stuck to familiar territory with Jack, Lachlan and Cooper retaining their place in the top 10 alongside longtime companions Emily, Chloe and Olivia.

William retained his crown in 2013 as the most popular boys' name for the fifth year in a row and Charlotte nestled into first place, nudging Ruby back to number 2, a place she held in 2010 and 2011.

Judging from the lists of names dating back to the 1960s on the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, we've been sticking with our trusty favourites for years.

For example, Matthew and Daniel, along with James and Joshua have been lingering within or close to the top 10 since the early 1990s but in fact have been popular since the 1970s.

Sarah, Jessica, Rebecca and Emma have been steadfast since the 1980s while Chloe, who has hovered in the top 20-30 names since the early 1990s made the top 10 in 1996 and is yet to exit. She topped the charts in 2011.

The top 100 names of 2013 will be released in March but until then, here's what made the top 10 lists:
