Popular $36 Woolies item divides parents: 'Threw it in the bin'
Woolworths is known for its affordable and yummy cakes, but this one didn't seem to stack up.
When you're planning a birthday for your child you want everything to be perfect from the decorations to the games and the gifts. And, of course, you want the cake to be everything your kiddo has dreamed of because, let's be honest, the cake is the star of the show!
Unfortunately, for some disgruntled Woolies shoppers, their attempt to save time and money by purchasing a popular smash cake from the supermarket chain didn't quite go as expected. In a Facebook group dedicated to the Aussie grocery store, some parents have been sharing their complaints about the birthday treat, while others have said that they thought it was top-notch.
"Daughter's birthday today," a Woolies shopper wrote in the group. "She wanted the smash cake. What a waste of 36 bucks. It was disgusting. Doughy and stale and just yuck!!!"

To add insult to injury, after another customer asked if there were at least plenty of lollies inside the cake once it had been smashed open, the response was less than ideal.
"There wasn't heaps," the original poster replied. "Wasn't too bad. 'Bout 15 I think. I heard reviews you don't get much so I expected that. But the cake itself is absolutely awful. None of us could eat it."
Other Woolies shoppers then started sharing their own reviews of the cake and they were mixed, to say the least.
Customers share complaints about smash cake
"Yep we had this experience in September not long after these were released," someone wrote.
"I brought this one and it was STALE too, got a full refund at Portland Vic Safeway store which was happy to give a full refund back," another added.
"Agree it is absolutely disgusting!!" someone else said. "How’s the inside look? Mine was all melted and stuck together and was so hard. The cake itself was disgusting we threw it in the bin."
"I wasn't a fan of it either... Kids loved the novelty of smashing the chocolate though," yet another person wrote.
Other shoppers were quick to offer sympathy and advice about the situation with one person commiserating, "Sorry to read this. Wrong on so many levels very disappointing."
"Please make sure to let Woolies know. I think you’ll get a refund. I know it’s no consolation to the birthday girl but it’s something," added a different group member.
"Contact the store you purchased it from. It should not be as you describe. Ask for a refund, I realise this will not replace your 'moment in time' but at least get your money back," said a third.
Customers rave about Woolies smash cake
Despite the negative reviews from some shoppers, there were plenty of people who'd had great experiences with the smash cake and were more than happy to sing its praises.
"Oh wow really? My daughter had this for her birthday just gone at the end of June and it was great," someone said.
"My son had this cake and it was actually one of the nicer Woolies cakes, chocolate was nice and a good amount of lollies too," added another shopper.
"I have brought this a few times and it's the nicest mud cake I have had," someone else said.
"Our family has had this cake a couple of times and been awesome and fun every time," wrote yet another person.

Likewise, TikTok creators the Arvan Family shared a review of the smash cake with their 482k followers, giving the yummy treat a very enthusiastic thumbs up.
And then there was the person who came to the conversation with not only words of sympathy, but a very good (and nostalgic) solution too.
"Sorry to hear," they wrote. "Time to get the Woman’s Day [Weekly] cake cookbook out!"
