Those who enjoy binge-watching TV may be feeling particularly gluttonous at the moment, as there has been a veritable smorgasbord of quality shows to gorge on.

The White Lotus may have come to an end after a particularly tense new series and while we wait in breathless anticipation for the new series of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Last Of Us, there are programmes such as Adolescence, Apple Cider Vinegar and Dope Girls to catch up with.

But there is one TV show that has captured the zeitgeist and received rave reviews across the board; medical drama The Pitt has been hailed as the new Grey’s Anatomy, and has taken the US by storm.

Former ER star Noah Wyle has teamed up with the show’s executive producers John Wells and R Scott Gemmill to tell the story of a cash-strapped Pittsburgh hospital. However, what makes The Pitt so watchable is that the medical drama unfolds in real-time, looking at how one 15-hour shift unfolds throughout one season.

The Pitt has already been renewed for a season two.

Here’s what we know about the show, and whether it will be coming to UK shores anytime soon.

Is The Pitt available to watch in the UK?

The Pitt airs on Max in the US, a platform not available in the UK. Currently, there is no word on whether The Pitt will be aired across the Atlantic, or on what platform this may be on.

As an off-shoot of HBO, some series that broadcast on that channel have made it to UK shores. Series like The White Lotus and Euphoria have been available to view on Sky or its on-demand streaming service, Now TV.

However, Max is launching in the UK as its own platform in 2026, which could mean we may not be seeing The Pitt until next year.

What is The Pitt about?

A hyper-realistic examination on what it is like to work as a doctor in high-pressure environments, the series centres around a team of doctors and nurses led by Dr. Michael Robinavitch (Noah Wyle) in the emergency room of a Pittsburgh hospital, affectionately nicknamed 'The Pitt'.

The Pitt came about in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, with Wyle explaining to Variety that he was "steeped in depression and feeling pretty useless" as the respiratory virus held the world in its vice grip. Covid plays a part in the first series – seeing Robby at work against his better judgement on the anniversary of the death of his mentor, who died after contracting the virus.

“We realised that there was a reason to do it again, as long as we could find a way to do it that was fresh for both us and the audience so that we weren’t just retreading what we’d done in the past,” Wyle explains.

The series has also received rave reviews from critics for being an innovative new take on a well-worn trope – with its distinctly similar feel to ER not necessarily a bad thing.

The Guardian wrote: “The Pitt feels fresh – simple, sleek, competently made and relevant to a country whose healthcare system is notoriously inequitable and actively under attack from the administration.

“A mix of quick adrenaline hits and longer, nuanced story arcs, of formal gimmicks (like 24, each episode covers roughly an hour in real time) and tried-and-true staples (Patrick Ball’s hot doctor with an attitude, cases that are always more complicated than they initially seem).”

Elsewhere, Vulture wrote: “[The Pitt] has so much of what contemporary medical dramas are often lacking: it moves fast and expects you to keep up and is much more interested in everyday traumas than bizarre medical mysteries.

“It also has so little of what often makes medical dramas obnoxious: the swelling music cues, the grandiose emotional platitudes, the overall sheen. It’s simple, deceptively so, and if it’s so close to one of the greatest medical dramas in TV history that you could close your eyes and mistake one for the other, who’s complaining?”
