Sam Burgess has shared his “hurt” over seeing his wife Phoebe upset in his first statement after the South Sydney star became embroiled in the recent Rabbitohs sexting scandal.
“What hurts me the most is seeing my wife upset,” the 29-year-old said at a press conference on Tuesday. “I’m not angry, you can all make your own assumptions regarding the timing of this whole thing coming to light.”
The NRL star insisted his only priority was his loved ones.
“I just want to protect my family,” he explained.
Earlier today, Phoebe broke her silence for the first time since it was alleged that two Rabbitohs players indecently exposed themselves to a young woman using Sam’s social media account.
The 29-year-old, who is pregnant with the couple’s second child, shared a family-centred photo on Instagram of herself with a prominent baby bump, sitting alongside 18-month-old daughter, Poppy.
“Moments in the sun with our babies,” she wrote, adding that she was 27 weeks along in her pregnancy.
The journalist also tagged her husband Sam, and a man’s shadow can be seen in the frame, presumably taking the image.
Sam and Phoebe tied the knot in 2015 and welcomed their first child together in January last year.
On Friday, claims emerged two Rabbitohs players indecently exposed themselves in a video to a young woman without consent, via a social media account reportedly belonging to Sam.
The incident reportedly took place back in May.
After the news broke, Phoebe called off an appearance at the Colgate Optic White Stakes Day on Saturday.
Last week News Corp Australia reported verified social media accounts belonging to Sam are at the centre of the saga.
There was no suggestion Phoebe’s husband was involved, however it is alleged multiple Rabbitohs players exposed themselves to the 23-year-old woman after a win over the Warriors.
