When it comes to Doctor Odyssey's love triangle, why choose when you can have it all?
ABC's medical procedural on the high seas shocked viewers early on in its debut season when the ship's medical team trio Max (Joshua Jackson), Avery (Phillipa Soo), and Tristan (Sean Teale) gave in to their simmering will-they-won't-they tension and had a spicy threesome after a night of drunken bonding. Then Avery floated the idea of embarking on an actual throuple relationship with her two coworkers, but the men (unfortunately) didn't want to share her (lame!).
While the idea of a throuple tragically died too soon, the drama continued to ramp up when Avery discovered their night of three-way passion resulted in a pregnancy — and she still has no idea who the father is. She also has no idea which man she wants to be with now that both have declared their intentions for her. But who does Soo want her character to end up with? Turns out she's just as down for the throuple as the fans are.
Below, Soo breaks down her hopes for Avery's romantic future, what fans can expect from the rest of season 1, and more.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: The love triangle has gone to unexpected places! It feels so fresh, not just for a network procedural drama but for TV in general. Did you always know that this was where the story was heading for your character when you signed on for the role?
PHILLIPA SOO: I had absolutely no idea. It's fun when you are working on something and you go into it knowing a baseline, and you come in with your own spin on what you think for your character, and then you hear things like that. I always try and remember the feeling — my own feeling, but also the feeling of the room — when that news was heard for the first time and the reaction. And I always think to myself like, "I really hope we can give everybody else the reaction that we just had in the room while we were having this creative discussion." I thought, "Nobody's going to expect this." And also just as an actor, I'm like, "Oh my God, how am I going to pull this off?" That was very much right at the beginning; we hadn't even shot anything yet. It was fun and scary — scary in a fun kind of actory way. I'm really proud of what we made.
What was the reaction when you all heard the love triangle was going to become a potential throuple resulting in a pregnancy?
[Laughs] We were all very surprised. There's just a level of storytelling that is ingrained in us in terms of what we expect to see from a love triangle with two men and one woman. This felt modern — it felt modern and complicated in a very sort of human way, especially as the story continues to develop from the moment that they all connected and hooked up and realized that they all had these really deep feelings for each other as coworkers in this very insular environment on the ship. It just left us feeling like there was a lot of room to play with this dynamic and what the potential outcomes could possibly be. And especially as three characters who were very new to this concept, I think that also left room for a lot of interesting conversations for these characters to potentially have. From the jump off, we were just all like, "Okay, let's see how this is going to go." And the reaction has been great. It's been really surprising, and I hope people are enjoying seeing how all of it unfolds. It's been fun to make, so I hope people enjoy watching it.
As of the latest episode, Avery has decided to keep the baby, and Max just told her he’s all in on them. But she had kissed Tristan and seemed to choose him before that, so where is Avery’s head at right now?
Oh my gosh, it's all over the place. What's really, really true to this character's journey, I think is it feels authentic just as a modern woman in the world. There's a lot of layers to her decision-making and wanting to feel like you don't have to compromise in order to get the most ideal situation. Avery is a person who had a lot of plans, was making plans, having goals, having autonomy over her choices, and what she wants to do with her life was really a way to regain control after maybe not having it, especially after her first marriage. She also has her own needs and her own self-love. I think she actually knows that she loves herself the most, so that's just sort of added a whole complicated layer in terms of what's the best decision to make.

What are the chances we could see a return to the throuple idea?
[Laughs] Gosh, I don't want to tease too much, but their relationship continues to grow. I was certainly surprised by [it]. I was really surprised by how all of these characters are actually just trying their best, and I think in a conventional love triangle story, maybe it can get a little, for the sake of drama's sake, making it fiery. At the core, I think it's just three characters that are just really trying their best to do well at their jobs because they're here to do a job and they all work together, but also to really try and figure it out with each other and for each other. There's a generosity there that is unique to their particular love triangle. So yes, it grows, it changes, it ebbs and flows. You'll get to see a bunch of things play out.
So you're saying there's a chance ...
There's always a chance.
Is that something you're actively rooting for, for them to become a true throuple?
Totally. We've never seen it on television before in this way and in this particular arrangement in this particular genre. I'm fascinated by it. This idea of conventional relationships, we've only scratched the surface about what that can be for people. And even just the conversation alone, I think it's such a strange new thing that some people have no exposure to whatsoever. So seeing it on the screen and for everybody to be aware of and explore for themselves I think is really great. Humans are complicated, so the more that we can see things like this wonderful throuple or any other complicated human relationships that we can see, play out on such a national stage I think is awesome.

Who do you want to see Avery end up with by the end of this season?
Oh my gosh. Honestly, I couldn't tell you, but certainly the writers did a really good job at making it really hard to pick which one myself or anybody watching would want to see her with. We're truly going along for the ride with her.
Will the love triangle be resolved by the end of this season?
There is some evolution. There's definitely some evolution happening for all three of them, but as with any great story, it's never complete.
Doctor Odyssey airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
