Family Member Books 'Passive Aggressive' Relative a Vacation for Christmas — Then Cancels It Without Telling Them

A Reddit user is opening up about their decision to enact some "petty revenge" after a family member they thought they had stopped arguing with decided not to get them a Christmas gift.

On Thursday, Dec. 26, a Reddit user shared their story about a confrontation with someone they called a "s---ty family member" to the r/PettyRevenge subreddit. According to the user, this family member could only be described as "honestly s---ty," and they've had many arguments and differences in the past, but have since "made up" — at least, that's what the Redditor thought.

"So this year for Christmas I gifted them a vacation they did really want to make," the post states. "I printed out the booking reservation and gave it as a gift."

To the user's shock, the gift was completely one-sided. Their family member had not gotten a gift for Christmas — and they began insulting the user.

"[Not] only did shitty family member had nothing for me in return," the user wrote — noting that their family member's excuse was: "'I just had so much stuff do to, honestly I totally forgot about you!'" — "they also continued to make passive aggressive remarks about my home and the food I provided," as they were the host of the family Christmas party.

Here's where the pettiness begins — the Redditor revealed that they canceled the vacation without telling their family member.

"So petty me cancelled their vacation without telling them after I knew they were on their way to the destination," they revealed.

"Yes, there are fees but I don't care. I know they will be to stingy to book anything else and will instead return all the way back home fuming and annoyed — which is a great source of joy for me," they finished. "Cheers!"

Much of the r/PettyRevenge community was in shock over this response, with many commenters questioning why the user would make this decision in the first place, or why they wouldn't take the vacation for themself instead.

"Why didn't you take the vacation yourself and change the names [on the tickets]?" one commenter questioned, to which the user replied with a frowny face: "Because I was enraged and impulsive."

The user also added some clarifying comments, noting that this family member is known for complaining about the Redditor to their brothers, so he expects to make up an excuse as to why he canceled the trip by saying: "you told [my brother] you found it stupid/cheap/whatever and did not like the gift, so I though it would be better to cancel."

Another commenter criticized the Redditor for giving such an expensive present to a person who had treated them poorly.

"You’re the one who looks stupid for knowing this family member is s---ty and still gifting them a vacation," the critic wrote. "You sound like a doormat."

"To be honest I kind of am. I let myself get trapped into the whole 'family helps family' thing and I feel guilty for being better off then most of my family," the user wrote in a reply. "... So I try to give back or help out with otherwise hard to achieve dreams on Christmas - but yes, definitely am not appreciated and felt also deceived by the whole thing where we 'made up.'"

Not everyone had negative things to say, however. Several replies praised the user for taking such direct action against someone who was rude to them.

"Everyone’s giving their ideas on what to tell [s---ty] family member about the vacation," one reply read. "My two cents: I would just tell them I realized I was doing them (and myself) a disservice by rewarding bad behavior and it is my intention to stop doing that from here on out."

"I love this, not only is this petty but 100% AWESOME!" another commenter added. "Next year be sure to ask them in front of everybody: 'How was [your] trip?'"
