Pete Davidson jokes about 'SNL' salary: 'Do you guys know what they pay us?'

A spot on "Saturday Night Live" represents the height of success for many comics — but it may not come with a big payout.

Pete Davidson, an alum of the show who has parlayed his fame into comedy specials and movie roles, revealed he made $3,000 an episode when he started, in a video for New York Magazine.

"Do you guys know what they pay us? It's like three grand an episode," he joked in response to a question about his biggest indulgence after receiving the first paycheck. "I think I got dinner."

The video comes as part of a larger series by the magazine celebrating the late-night sketch-comedy show's 50th anniversary. Since its premiere in 1975, the show has served as a launch point for the careers of some of the 21st-century's greatest comics. Steve Martin, Kate McKinnon and Eddie Murphy are just a few of the big names to come out of the program.

Other notable past stars like Julia Louis Dreyfus and Seth Meyers cited furniture or shoes as their first big purchases, while "Wicked" star Bowen Yang revealed a more luxurious choice: Gucci shoes.

Jason Sudeikis, who worked for "SNL" from 2003 to 2013 first as a writer, and then as a cast member, echoed Davidson's sentiment.

"I mean, you don't make enough money to make big purchases. So I think New York rent was probably the biggest purchase I made after writing my first year on 'SNL,'" the "Ted Lasso" star said in the video.

The show is broadcast live from Rockefeller Center in New York City, which has notoriously high rent.

The true breakdown of salaries at "SNL" remains opaque, though many cast members use the "off-season" of the show to pursue other projects.
