Characters like Ripley from "Alien" depart from traditional female stereotypes in movies and embody powerful themes of intelligence, bravery, and courage. Strong female characters encourage diverse and authentic storytelling, leading to amazing portrayals of women on screen.
Reddit user Sophia_Lisko posed the question , "Who’s the most badass female character in a movie? (She doesn’t have to be physically badass)." Here are some of the movies that resonated with people:
1. Ripley (played by Sigourney Weaver ) in Alien (1979)
"When I first started out of hours work as a doctor I would literally think about Ripley when I got called to emergency cases in the middle of the night. She’s a character who, in the literal face of fear, just pledges to do the best she can. Which is real bravery, I think. One of the best female characters ever written."

"Linda Hamilton gets my vote. Sigourney Weaver is right up there too, but when I was a kid and saw Terminator 2 for the first time, the scene with Sarah Connor doing pull-ups in her cell really cemented itself in my brain. I hadn't seen any really physically badass women before."

Walt Disney Feature Animation / Buena Vista Pictures Distribution / Via amazon.com 6. Wendy Torrance (played by Shelley Duvall) in The Shining (1980)
"Wendy, Danny's mother from The Shining . She was the only one at the Overlook who was completely alone. Danny had his shining and Halloran, Jack had the hotel itself and the spooks within. Only Wendy was completely isolated and still she did everything she could to protect her son."

Warner Bros. / Getty Images / Via Getty Images 7. Dorothy Gale (played by Judy Garland) in The Wizard of Oz (1939)
"To be quite honest, Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz did some badass shit. First, she's a child. Second, she stood up to the old bat trying to take her dog. Third, she gets dropped into a weird fantasy world and, alone, decides she's walking through it to take a chance on the thin possibility that some dude in a faraway city might be able to help her. Then, a witch tries to take her shoes and threatens her and her dog. She goes on her journey anyway, makes friends, helps them above helping herself, and kills said witch (spoiler) before finally achieving her goal (without the help of the guy she was going to see). I don't know how to fit more badassery into one character."

"Marge Gunderson from Fargo is my favorite unassuming badass. Catches her killers with a gentle scolding, never loses her cool, comes home to chat about duck paintings with her husband, and does it all heavily pregnant."

"She’s badass because she faces her fears and is not afraid to stand up and fight, it doesn’t mean that she particularly needs to win or beat some enemies. It’s about facing fears and trauma and being strong when your life falls apart and when life is f****d. Standing up, even when you can’t. That’s badass."

"Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic . That movie is not about a boat sinking. It is not about Jack Dawson. That movie is about Rose DeWitt Bukater being a rule-breaking, chance-taking, society-defying, axe-wielding, DiCaprio-freeing LEGEND, and she is AWESOME. As is Kate Winslett. Obviously"

"The mother in Three Billboards Outside Billing, Missouri . I remember this movie vividly. We were a group of 25-year-olds who didn't read the plot or anything about the movie. We were bored and wanted to see a movie. Holy shit. The hall remained silent the whole time except for the sounds of someone crying. I'm pretty sure all of us cried. There was this one scene, where seeing the raw grief and anger — I just burst into tears. I was a 25-year-old guy, outgoing, loved action and horror, and just generally cheerful. Really, really far off from a middle-aged woman who's lost her daughter. The movie was such a punch to the gut. The grief and anger were overwhelming."
