In 2013, the U.K. was introduced to an incredible period drama called Peaky Blinders. Premiering on BBC Two, the show followed the Peaky Blinders gang in 1920s Birmingham. The criminal organization dealt with the inner dealings of the city they lived in... along with dynamics within the group they were all a part of. And with Thomas "Tommy" Shelby (played by Oppenheimer star and Oscar winner Cillian Murphy) leading the group, folks couldn't get enough of the suspense, drama and overall ominous vibe the show brought to television.
Some years later, American viewers got to witness Peaky Blinders when it started airing on Netflix. They immediately understood the hype behind the show, and what's more, the series developed its own following in the United States. But after six seasons, Peaky Blinders ended in 2022, with many hoping that they'd get to see the Peaky Blinders gang back on their screens again.
Well, it looks like that wish came true, because Peaky Blinders is coming back in the form of a movie! With Cillian reprising his role, there's a lot more to explore with Tommy and his fellow associates. But like any good crime film, we need to get all the clues before we can figure out the mystery for ourselves.
Here's everything we know so far about the Peaky Blinders movie:
Is Peaky Blinders coming back?
In a surprise twist of events, Netflix shocked Peaky Blinders fans in early 2024 with huge news. Not only would the streamer be producing a spinoff movie, Cillian Murphy would return to portray Tommy Shelby once again. He also would add another role to the project, as he's executive producing the film.
"It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me," Cillian said in an official statement, per Variety. "It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with [creator] Steven Knight and [director] Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans."
What's more, Tom had comments about how he never expected the international success Peaky Blinders would have to warrant a spinoff movie. "When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become," he added. "But we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. Peaky has always been a story about family – and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix."
What is the Peaky Blinders movie about?
According to Netflix's Tudum, the Peaky Blinders movie is set to be a continuation of events that occurred in the original series.
While the show was originally set in Birmingham, England between 1919 and 1934, Stephen told the Radio Times in 2023 that the film will be set during World War II. He said the movie will be "the same, but different" than the series, and that longtime viewers will want to "expect the unexpected." "Yeah, it's going to be fun," he added at the time.
What's more, when he spoke to Esquire U.K. in February 2022, he teased how new characters introduced in the show's season 6 could potentially influence the movie's storyline.
“In series six we're bringing in the new generation, and they are going to be part of what happens in the film, " Knight said at the time. “I think it's finding those actors that you just watch and you think, there you go. There's the future.”
