Patrick Mahomes Excitedly Trash-Talks His Former Teammate and Yankees Fan at Kansas City Royals Game

Mahomes, who owns a 1% stake in the franchise, was locked into Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday, Oct. 9

No matter the sport, Patrick Mahomes brings the energy!

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was on hand at Kauffman Stadium for Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday, Oct. 9 to cheer on the Kansas City Royals — and he made sure to razz a former teammate who happens to be a Yankees fan.

When the Royals tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning, Mahomes, 29, was seen in a suite skipping over to former Chiefs receiver Gehrig Dieter, bumping into him and giving him an earful about the play.

Dieter, 31, who wore a Yankees jersey, smiled and then pretended to punch Mahomes.

The retired NFL player got the last laugh, though, after the Yankees ended up winning the game 3-2 and taking a 2-1 lead in the series.

Mahomes — who has a 1% ownership stake in the Royals — has a rooting interest, but Dieter calls himself a lifelong fan of the Bronx Bombers. After all, he was named after Yankees great Lou Gehrig.

An undrafted rookie who signed with the Chiefs in 2017, Dieter played five seasons for the team over 2017-2021 mostly on the practice squad, but he picked up a Super Bowl ring in 2020.

According to a Chiefs fan site, Dieter comes from a family of baseball aficionados. His brother is named after Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, while another brother is named after Yankees catcher Thurman Munson.

Despite the outcome, Mahomes (and his wife Brittany) seemingly enjoyed watching the game — something they frequently do for other teams which they support.

The son of retired MLB pitcher Patrick Mahomes Sr. and an East Texas native, Mahomes was a courtside fixture at Dallas Mavericks games last year.
