Parental Guidance's Allison Langdon on why parents would go on the show: 'Be better'
Allison Langdon has spoken out about Channel Nine's controversial reality show.
It’s one of the most controversial programs on TV, and now the host of Parental Guidance, Allison Langdon, has opened up about why parents would go on the show in the first place.
The Channel Nine series takes twelve sets of parents with different methods of parenting and sets them a number of challenges. According to the show, the challenges are ‘grounded in real-life scenarios to illuminate the strengths and weaknesses inherent in each parenting style’.
This year, a number of different parenting styles will be put to the test, such as the Influencer parents, the Lighthouse parents and the Unstructured parents.

Speaking on the TV RELOAD podcast, Allison Langdon said parents are keen to impart their wisdom on others but also learn some tips from parenting expert Justin Coulson along the way
“A lot of them come on with the idea of like, we do this and we love how we parent ourselves, but they are open to becoming better parents,” Allison said.
“As soon as Dr. Justin Coulson opened his mouth with advice, you see everyone in the room, lean forward and take everything in. They're very different when I speak for some reason, I have no idea why,” Allison joked.
“But when you're sharing your wisdom, and what he's learned, and he also has six girls, he’s in a house with seven females, that's a lot of female energy, so he knows what he's talking about. I think everyone's there to be better because we just want to raise good, kind humans who go out and live their very best life.”
Allison moderates the show, which can get heated at times as each of the parents defend their own unique parenting style. However, she said she’s not there to judge.
“If you saw how I parent at home, you realise that there is no judgment coming from me from anything that we do? I'm very happy to challenge a parenting style if I feel it needs to be but that's also what the room does. The other parenting styles do that, too. I can almost, you know, almost leave it up to them,” she said.
Shocking scene in first episode
Viewers were left shocked on Monday night when Lighthouse parents Sammy and Jason shared how they choose to parent their young children, allowing their 10-year-old and six-year-old to go to the beach and swim solo.
"I feel ill," Team mum Leanne told the couple after watching video of the children swimming while the parents watched from their balcony.
"That water can change in an instant, and from where you are and where the kids are... they're gone," she added.
The couple were quick to say the lifeguards are always there if anything should go wrong, as the children only swim between the flags.

Viewers on Twitter were quick to slam the pair, with one user writing, "I am screaming! Letting the kids swim in the ocean!?! It’s not about trust of the kids, you can’t trust the ocean and rips!"
"I cannot wrap my head around it!" another agreed.
"I couldn’t believe my eyes," a third wrote.
