Outlander’s David Berry: Lord John’s Grief Over Jamie’s Death ‘Is Going to Tear Him Apart’ — Watch Exclusive Sneak Peek

Grief makes people do strange things, but we can’t fault William — in this Friday’s Outlander (Starz, 8/7c) — for thinking that his grieving father might’ve lost his mind a little.

After all: Lord John, a former British officer from a storied military family, marrying a rebel widow in hasty fashion?

“By tying your name to hers, you put that very name in jeopardy,” William warns Lord John in the exclusive sneak peek above. “What will your comrades say?”

But what we know, and William does not, is the depth of feeling Lord John had for Jamie. In the wake of the Scot’s reported death in the previous episode (read a recap here), Grey is in deep mourning for his friend/aspirational romantic partner. As such, he’s willing to do anything to honor their long and complicated friendship — even wed Claire to shield her from treasonous suspicion.

“James Fraser was my friend, and he loved his wife more than anything in this world. I owe it to him to protect her,” Lord John explains, eyes full of tears.

“I hope audiences can really relate to John’s grief in this moment as much as they relate to Claire’s,” David Berry, who plays the closeted Lord John, tells TVLine. “I think it’s easy for audiences to really tap into the grief that Claire is feeling, but this is also a great love that Lord John has been carrying and a huge loss that he experiences.”

What’s worse: No one really knows how he feels, nor is it socially acceptable for him to grieve his friend’s passing. “There is a real problem and tragedy in that he can’t mourn the way publicly, or even privately, that he wants to. He has to hide it from William. He has to hide it from the public,” Berry says. “Again, he’s very adept at hiding things and the things that he loves, but it’s going to tear him apart.”
