Nicole Kidman 'teased' over major insecurity: 'Can you believe it'
Nicole Kidman has spoken out about getting 'teased' as a teenager for her body shape.
While Nicole Kidman gives off a major aura of confidence, the Aussie actress has opened up about her insecurities in the new docuseries, In Vogue: The 90s, which is available to stream on Disney+. The show does a deep dive into Vogue in the 90s, as well as its editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour.
In episode three, designer John Galliano shared that he wanted to make a splash in the fashion world after dressing Princess Diana for the 1996 Met Gala, and he had his sights set on Nicole. The Aussie star went on to wear one of his creations for the 1997 Oscars, with the actress saying the moment of having a designer wanting to make a dress specifically for her made her think about her insecurities as a teenager.

"Can you believe it?" she asked. "My whole life, I wanted to be 5'2" and curvaceous, and suddenly, being 5'11" and completely sort of skinny and flat chested was like, 'Great, we can dress you.'"
Nicole said she had so much respect for the women in the industry who defined their style by the designers they chose and the partnerships they made.
"I grew up watching Audrey Hepburn and Katharine Hepburn and Grace Kelly — all these women whose style was created with the designers that they’re affiliated with," the actress said. "They just loved fashion. So I remember thinking, but of course, this should be brought into Hollywood now, and we should be wearing the things that are made in these gorgeous little salons in Paris. Because that’s what they used to do, so why aren’t we still doing it?"
Speaking about stepping out in her Galliano dress, Nicole said it felt like a fairytale.
"I mean, I was a red-headed, fair-skinned girl who was almost 5’11 at the age of 14," she said. "I would get teased, and it wasn’t kind. So every time I was given access to that whole world, you feel like a little girl who's been given the chance to step into this sort of fantasy world."
Nicole's personal heartbreak: 'I am in shock'
It comes after the actress revealed the devastating loss of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, earlier this month through a speech delivered by her Babygirl director, Halina Reijn, after the Aussie star won the award for Best Actress at the Venice International Film Festival.
The beloved actress revealed she was "in shock" after finding out the news shortly after arriving in Venice for the festival.
Halina spoke to the audience on Nicole's behalf, reading a note written by the star that read: "Today I arrived in Venice to find out shortly after, that my beautiful, brave mother Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed. I am in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her, she shaped me, she guided me, and she made me."'

The note continued, "I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina, the collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken."
Halina added, "We love you all, Nicole."
In 2022, Nicole revealed on NPR's Fresh Air podcast that her mother was in poor health but didn't share further information.
"We’re down here [in Australia] primarily to take care of my mother and to have her surrounded by her grandchildren," she said.
