Shiny leg optical illusion dividing internet

This optical illusion sweeping the internet is seriously messing with people's minds.

Twitter user @kingkayden posted a picture of a pair of legs online yesterday, alongside the caption: "Are these legs shiny and oily or are they legs with white paint on them?"

Just like the whole dress debacle back 2015, where the Internet was drastically divided on whether or not a dress was black and blue or white and gold, people are now baffled as to what's happening in this picture.

If you're anything like me, you'll straight away think somebody has oiled up their legs way too much and wish them good luck trying to get off the floor in that slippery situation.

However after asking around the office, even we were divided on whether or not the girl in the picture has shiny legs or they're just covered in white paint.

The photo was initially posted online by Instagram user Hunter Culverhouse, who told Insider that the illusion was created by accident.

“[I] had some white paint left on my brush and put random lines on my legs, turned out to be a completely confusing picture for everyone on the internet,” she said.

Speaking to psychologist Tom Toppino, he claimed that the reason people see shiny legs instead of the white paint is because of our "sensory cues."

He said while you may see shiny legs once you first look at the photo, if you're told it's actually white paint then you open up to seeing it.

Twitter users were quick to give their opinion on the photos, with many pointing out that there actually is in fact white art supplies on the floor.
