In his introduction, reality-star Kardashian got his first barb, he said: "The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton… a bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought, allegedly."

The first presenter of the night was Johnny Depp, who was the butt of Gervais’s jokes last year about his movie with Angelina Jolie, The Tourist. Standing next to Depp on stage, Gervais said: "Have you seen The Tourist yet?"

Depp admitted he hadn’t, People magazine reported.

Joking about the Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson’s film The Beaver, Gervais said: "I mustn't mention Mel Gibson this year. Not his private life, his politics, his recent films or especially not Jodie Foster's Beaver."

Gervais joked about Justin Bieber’s paternity-test drama, with the tongue-in-cheek quip: "The only way he could have impregnated a girl was if he borrowed one of Martha Stewart's old turkey basters."

Helen Mirren also got a mention from the comic while he praised the female stars of Bridesmaids for getting down and dirty in the movie.
