Kerri-Anne Kennerley's exclusive interview about John

Surgeons say only time will tell how John Kennerley, 75, will recover from breaking his C2 and C3 vertebrae after falling backwards off a veranda and through a hedge at a golf resort on NSW’s mid-north coast.

Five weeks after the accident, he has feeling in his legs but no movement in his arms, and he still has a respirator helping him breathe.

‘Yes, it’s frustrating for him because he’s completely alert,’ she says. ‘But we’ve been told it could take up to 12 months until we know the extent of the damage, so we just have to keep going.’

Kerri-Anne explains that John was posing for photos on a veranda when he lost his footing and fell through a box hedge, hitting the ground a metre below.

‘I ran round and crouched down by him. He wasn’t getting up and he kept saying: “I can’t feel anything,",' she reveals.

John has been her rock through career ups and downs, miscarriage and the terror of breast cancer. Now it’s her turn to be the strong one.

'This is like being thrown into Antarctica,’ she says. ‘It’s our Antarctica. But the only way to get through it is to arrange our brain around it and go forward.’
