She's a mum and businesswoman leading a happy family life in her comfortable suburban Perth home.

But this everyday scene hides a terrifying encounter that Kate Moir, now 46, is lucky to have survived.

Nearly three decades ago, Kate managed to escape notorious serial killers David and Catherine Birnie.

The Birnies kidnapped, raped and murdered four young Perth women over a one-month period in 1986 and were caught and sentenced to life in jail. David committed suicide 10 years ago.

It’s only now, all these years later, that Kate is prepared to talk publicly about the Birnies, to remind authorities and the public why Catherine, 64, should remain behind bars forever.

‘This will be the third time her release is considered. Officials shouldn’t be bothering families of the victims, and me, wanting our thoughts about this. It’s not fair,' said Kate.

'I’m opposed to her ever getting out – she should have been hanged at the outset, she’s that evil.’

Kate, now a keen artist whose home is adorned with colourful paintings, says she has never allowed her teenage experience to wreck her outlook on life.

‘I’m a survivor, not a victim,’ she says.
