Michael Douglas attributes marriage problems to his kids

Michael Douglas has revealed his marriage mistakes that led to his temporary split from wife Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2012 came down to the couple's tendency to focus on their children.

The 69-year-old two-time Oscar-winning actor and his wife arrived in Jerusalem with their children, Dylan Douglas, 13, and Carys Douglas, 11 to celebrate their son's bar mitzvah on June 26.

He said: "Marriage requires constant nurturing. Don't put it all in the kids."

He explained: "You can exhaust yourself with the energy you put into your children so there's none left for the two of you. It's a dangerous seduction to fall into, with the best intentions. You have to watch that one."

The actor shared more marriage tips, explaining: "It goes to the idea of where you spend your energy and attention: do you spend it with strangers, trying to show everybody how nice you are? Or do you cherish your partner and really don't worry about other people. A lot of it has to do with age."

He added: "When you've accomplished a certain amount in your career, it satisfies you and therefore makes you appreciate-and hopefully you do that sooner rather than later-the value of your partner."
