Netflix pulls plug on 'Girls5eva,' cancels show

"Girls5eva"? More like Girls4Now.

The show, which stars Busy Philipps and Sara Bareilles as members of a washed-up girl group, has been canceled (again), Variety and Deadline report.

After moving from Peacock to Netflix for Season 3, the streamer announced that it would not renew "Girls5Eva" for a fourth season.

USA TODAY has reached out to Netflix for comment.

Philipps, a veteran of the small screen, previewed the announcement earlier this month on her podcast "Doing Her Best."

"('Girls5eva' is) dead. I'm just saying it," the former "Freaks and Geeks" star said during a Dec. 4 episode. "If Netflix won't, I will. I guess not enough people watched it or watched it the way that counts."

Busy Philipps as Summer, Sara Bareilles as Dawn Solano, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Wickie Roy and Paula Pell as Gloria on "Girls5Eva."

Philipps revealed that the deal that brought the show over to Netflix after Peacock canceled it was somewhat unique. "Normally when you do a TV show, there's a contract and you have to let the actors know by a certain date or they are free to go pursue other things in first position," she said. "But we didn't have that deal structured. I know that all of us would kill to do more in any capacity, like a movie … or a fourth and final season. But I just think it's not, probably, happening."

She went on to joke that the foursome, which also includes Paula Pell and Renée Elise Goldsberry, should just do a real concert at Radio City Music Hall.

The program, which debuted in 2021 sees the fictional '90s girl group Girls5eva attempt to stage a comeback, featuring original songs like "Dream Girlfriends" and "The Splingy" meant to be equal parts catchy and hilarious.

USA TODAY's TV critic Kelly Lawler called the series "a biting satire of what the music industry (and Hollywood) does to women who reach a certain age."

Despite several high-profile producers (read: Tina Fey) and a star-studded cast, however, the show seems to have sputtered out rather than found its groove on a new platform.
