Neighbours: Who's coming back for the reboot?

We reveal who's coming back to Ramsay Street, and the new character you can't wait to meet.

It's just over a year since we said a tearful farewell to the classic Aussie soap Neighbours, but thankfully, we don't have to wait long for the reboot of the show, and a second chance of making good neighbours, good friends.

The excitement is building to see just what our favourite characters, old and new, are getting up to when we return to Erinsborough. But just who will be returning to Ramsay Street?

Harold Bishop (Ian Smith)

Actor Ian Smith, 83, has played Harold Bishop on and off for 36 years and fans of the show will be thrilled to see that he can be seen in the previews for the new episodes. But for how long is unknown.

"I do want to retire," Ian told TV Tonight after his return was confirmed. "They've been so kind to let me come back to do bibs and bobs," he added.

Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis)

Paul was one of the original characters when Neighbours launched in 1985 and despite taking a break from the show for 10 years, he has been on our screens the second time around for almost 20 years.

But it wasn't a sure thing that actor Stefan Dennis would return after finishing filming last year. "It was confusing and shocking when we first found out it was coming back," Stefan told The Express in March.

"Because of the confusion and the shock of the immediate announcement I kind of went, ‘Do I want to go back or do I want to keep pursuing other work and go into semi-retirement so to speak?'

"It didn’t take long to realise it was a pretty darn good gig and I’d be a nut bag to say no to it," he added.

Terese Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou)

She may have made her name originally on rival soap Home and Away but Rebekah Elmaloglou has spent the past 10 years playing Terese Willis on Neighbours. And despite her and Paul's relationship ups and downs, it seems the couple are back together in the reboot as well.

"Beyond thrilled to be stepping back into my old gals shoes again today!" Rebekah wrote on Instagram.

"What a journey! Thank you to all of our incredibly loyal fans. We wouldn’t be back if it wasn’t for you all!"

Karl and Susan Kennedy (Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne)

The childhood sweethearts who divorced and then remarried are also back for the reboot. "Being back on Neighbours is like going home, but everything that was old is new again. It's very special and very different as well," actor Alan Fletcher told TV Week. "Neighbours has always been a family," he added.

And Jackie Woodburne, who plays his wife Susan, said that the wait for new episodes will be worth it. "Every day, I am more and more amazed at the way these stories are going. We are all stopping each other in the corridor, going, 'Have you read the script? Can you believe that that happens?' she revealed.

Toadie Rebecchi (Ryan Moloney)

Actor Ryan Moloney was only 16 when he started playing the troubled teen in the soap. Now 43, he got to have a shot at singing during the break in the show, appearing on The Masked Singer last year.

But he's thrilled to be back. "After 28 years, I do feel like I can slide back into him," he said on The Project.

Jane Harris (Annie Jones)

Annie Jones first played Jane Harris in 1986 before returning regularly in 2018. The finale last year saw her reunited with her first love Mike with the couple buying a house in Ramsay Street and bringing the relationship full circle.

So of course Annie wanted to return for the reboot! “For me, it was a no-brainer as I love playing Jane and I love being on the show and having the opportunity to grow as an actor with every storyline," Annie revealed.

Mike Young (Guy Pearce)

Also back after appearing in the finale last year is Guy Pearce who played Mike Young as early as 1986.

But the reboot was a bit of a quandary for Guy. "Annie and I called each other, 'What do we do now, because we’re living in the street,'" Guy said on the Good Weekend Talks podcast.

"And she said, ‘Well I’m all right because I’m on the show anyway, but what are you going to do?’ I said, ‘I don’t know.’ So we’re in the process of working it out.

"Obviously, if I’m going to extricate myself from the show, I want to do it respectfully. I wasn’t just gonna go, ‘Well, bad luck. You had your chance, that was it,’ you know. So there may be a little appearance or two, shall we say."

Reece Sinclair (Mischa Barton)

New to Neighbours is former The O.C. actress Mischa Barton! And if we know anything about new characters joining soaps, they cause trouble with a capital T!

"I’m excited to be part of this iconic show’s next chapter, and I am really looking forward to being back in Australia — a place I know and love," Mischa said in a statement.

"I think the character of Reece is going to be a great role for me to explore and play with."

But just who will stick around and who will wave goodbye to Ramsay Street for good?

Neighbours will continue to be broadcast in Australia on Network 10, its home for over three decades. while UK and US audiences can view the series on Amazon Freevee, plus Prime Video in Australia and New Zealand seven days after episodes air on Network 10.

Neighbours premieres Monday, September 18 At 4:30pm On 10 And 10 Play And 6:30pm On 10 Peach.
