What is Mange?

Mange is a painful skin disease caused by mites. According to the American Kennel Club, two types are found in dogs: Sarcoptic Mange and Demodectic Mange.

Sarcoptic Mange, also known as canine scabies, is caused by an eight-legged mite. This highly contagious parasite can spread from dog to dog and even be transmitted to humans. Symptoms include extreme itchiness, a red rash, hair loss, and crusty scabs. In advanced cases, it can lead to thickening of the skin, inflamed lymph nodes, and emaciation.

A cigar-shaped mite causes Demodex Mange. Unlike sarcoptic mange, this mite is not contagious to humans and often doesn’t cause any issues for dogs. However, dogs with weakened immune systems can face problems fighting this bug. It can occur in puppies and adults, especially those who may have undergone extreme stress or might be fighting medical conditions like cancer. Symptoms include localized patches of hair loss with red scaling skin, or it can affect the entire body, causing dogs to lose most, if not all, of their hair.

People were overcome with emotion seeing how far this beautiful girl had come. Viewer @dogsofinstagram responded, “Crying! The most beautiful GLO-up ever!” It is! Viewer @elibaumli remarked, “This is my most favorite reel!” It’s a great one. Viewer @marthaflunker responded, “Oh my goodness, Glo truly is absolute perfection!” That’s for sure!

This type of work requires someone with an enormous and giving heart. We can all be grateful for their existence, knowing the world is better because of them.
